There are many similar questions in the Lounge that don't get voted down. To me it looks like people vote because they don't understand her entirely. jhaga --------------------------------- I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived. Well, you have to keep this in mind: If I, only knowing English and a little Latin, went over to a message board that was mainly Finnish (or whatever lang) and I typed a message in some broken Finnish, would they be understanding of the fact that I don't speak their language? Most likely this would be the response: (translated) "You speak only English, this is not an English board, the title is not in English, you shouldn't post on here until you can speak our language." That is what gets me the most. A lot of people will come over to the US and expect us to learn their language, and not the other way around. I would have no problem with this if it was the same world wide. But I know that if I go over to Germany and can't speak the language, I'm gonna have a problem. So, where ever you go, don't go there if you can't speak the language.

Zachery wrote: typed a message in some broken Finnish :) I have alot of experience of that because I am not fluent in finnish either. My native language is swedish. The difference is that swedish speaking people have sometimes been the upper class here in Finland and it is considered a little "chic" not to speak good finnish. I for example, many times mix the expression "I met him" and "I killed him" in finnish, but I have never yet been corrected. I have also lived some years in Spain, and there people don't accept that you speak bad spanish. I usually compensate by speaking loud and accusing people of being stupid because they don't understand me. It usually works quite well. jhaga --------------------------------- I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived. I quite agree, though it's not limited just to WiB. Many of our fellow CPians are not English speakers, and it can be a strain sometimes to understand the intent of their posts. But it's polite, and proper to make the effort or just move along. There's no reason to make rude comments or vote a post down for such a trivial cause. Hell, I'm impressed that they make the attempt - I sure wouldn't try my limited Spanish on a Spanish board!

People should have a little bit more understanding for us people that don't have english as our first language. WiB gets voted down just because of that! I never vote posts down because of poor English understanding. I understand that many members of CP don't have English as a first language and appreciate that they make an effort to use it. As long as I can understand the post, I vote it up or down as if it were in perfect English, and if I can't understand what they're saying I either ask questions to try to understand or I ignore it. WiB gets voted down for posting the wrong question in the wrong forum and then defending her act by saying that she already knew it was the wrong forum and that she'd get voted down :-) Anyway I was really confused why she did it, till you told me her gender. That made everything clear instantly... Nish p.s. for libs out there, the last sentence is 100% intended as humor ;-)

There seems to be a lot of anaonymous 1 posting for little or no reason. I would still like to see the person who put the first 1 vote on a message named. Elaine :rose: The tigress is here :-D
