Leave? It's after office hours - if you have Jim has done his work why should he hang around? BTW are you this "Jim"? :-D

Hey guys, i have a scenario here and would like to hear your views on it. Today is Jim's first day at work and it is after office hours now, so he decides to leave. But looking around him, he sees all his colleagues still around and doesn't seem to leave yet. What should he do? Weiye, Chen When pursuing your dreams, don't forget to enjoy your life...
He should expose himself to everyone in the office, making proclamations about his obvious sexual prowess. ------- signature starts "...the staggering layers of obscenity in your statement make it a work of art on so many levels." - Jason Jystad, 10/26/2001 "You won't like me when I'm angry..." - Dr. Bruce Banner Please review the Legal Disclaimer in my bio. ------- signature ends

Jim should base is staying or leaving on whether or not his own work is "done". Since it's his first day, I say go home and enjoy the time until he gets swamped with work. BW "In a world full of people, only some want to fly,Isn't that crazy?" - Seal

I dunno about you but in my contract I'm sure I have a clause that says something about working from 8 till 5 or something like that :) Forcing people to work overtime everyday kills morale and productivity drops anyway... Of course if they have lots of team building events and pay lots for overtime and look after me then I might work overtime every now and then :-D

I guess it based on the nature of your work. A programmer's work is always not finished and if he chose to do overtime everyday, the company would perhaps have a headache, especially if they rest are doing the same way. At my current job I am grateful each evening that I work in the IT department. My boss comes up to us at around 5:27pm each evening (work ends at 5:30pm) and says something along the lines of "Why are you still here, don't you want to go home tonight?" Then he laughs, and waits for us to walk down to the car park with him. I can see the Client Services, Finance and Marketing depts from my desk. What a different story. I am usually 10 minutes early for work. They are all here - have been for hours. In the evenings, they stay late. Almost like an informal competition "I won't leave first!". So they sit around, playing Solitaire, waiting for each other to make the first move. Pathetic X|

Lucky you. Our boss always asks as to stay the extra hour - even when we have nothing to do. You should look into our timesheets - 14 hrs a day. But what they don't report is - 3-5 hrs of productivity, rest spent in coffee breaks, personal email, reading news, browsing CP

He should definitely leave. His coworkers are obviously inferior employees with serious time management problems. Just because the rest of the staff is incapable of getting their work done in a timely manner is no reason he should sit around after hours. Besides, if he did, management would start to expeect it.

Jim should leave dead on time with his head held high announcing that perhaps his colleagues should think about time management and ways of increasing their productivity, then they wouldn't have to stay behind, making up for their lack of efficiency. That should give them all, colleagues and bosses, the right impression ;) "The folly of man is that he dreams of what he can never achieve rather than dream of what he can." Well Jim, first usually you want to wait a week before surfing CP at work. Doing it your first day is risky. Your best plan for escape would be to pretend your going to another department or the bathroom. Then just leave. ;) Matt Newman

Say, do I know you? How did you just describe my office?? I see this trend a lot in IT fields here. Everyone stays late, and when questioned, everyone invariably says," It's the IT field, man. You're expected to work late." :omg: But I don't give a d*** and is usually the first out of the office( still well after working hours ). I have this feeling if there's ever going to be a layoff, I'm probably going to be the first to go. Nick Seng (the programmer formerly known as Notorious SMC)
