Einstein riddle

I solved it (good old spreadsheet) the only way that fits all the clues, BUT the 'answer page' does not show (indicating I did not solve it?!) My question is: when you read "The Norwegian lives in the first house." do you assume "first house" is on the left or the right? :confused:

Sadly I can't remember the details, but I have yet to meet someone presented with it who couldn't solve it. Of course, the friends I know who have tried it took varying amounts of time - perhaps there was a time restriction in his quote which has been lost...

Einstein also lived in a different era that is not accounted for. I believe people (as a whole) tend to get smarter with each passing generation. Maybe in his time, he noticed the majority of people were too unfamiliar with the concepts that he presented, but now we typically know more of them as they have already been proven or disproved and taught accordingly. For instance, logic is being taught to use in school nowadays, but back then it wasn't. The concepts aren't so strange to us. Jeremy Falcon

I did too and solved it in about 10 minutes. Just can't beat the ability to write scribbles all over the place!

Good point. I have some of my Dad's text books from 50 years ago, and am amazed at how little we knew of the physical world then, compared to today. And that knowledge was limited to a very few, as it was unusual for anyone to go beyond high school and on to college. Now we have a far larger segment of society college educated, and the knowledge taught is much more in depth than ever before. Einstein's claim was probably very true when he made it.

Hi I'm looking for that riddle that I think Einstein wrote, which he said only 2% or something of the world's poplation would be able to solve. Something about different colour houses and pets I think. any clues?

My question is: when you read "the green house is on the left of the white house", does it mean that the green house is the left neighbour of the white house? Or that the green house is one of the houses to the left of the white one? J

I took it to mean it is "the very next house to the left". Every clue is needed; it'd be too general if it meant "is one of the houses to the left"
