I just heard/read in the news today that Business Objects has bought out Crystal Decisions. From the Crystal Website[^] and another site.[^] I used to work for Cognos (who is the other Big Name is the BI market). We used to have "pep rallies" to promote the motto/slogan of "Crush BO" (Business Objects). When I got my job at Crystal, I figured, "hey, at least it's not BO," and when I called up my old boss at Cognos, and he said almost the same thing. And now, BO owns Crystal. So, I've gone from working with Cognos to BO. I wonder what my old boss'll say now. ;P Hopefully I'll still have a job after this merger/takeover/whatever is finalized. :~ I figure they'll honor the agreement, but you never know. I prefer to wear gloves when using it, but that's merely a matter of personal hygiene [Roger Wright on VB] Programming today is a race between software engineers striving to build bigger and better idiot-proof programs, and the Universe trying to produce bigger and better idiots. I did a presentation on Crystal Reports a few years ago. Total piece of crap, IMHO. But then, I haven't seen a report writer that isn't. Marc Every line of code is a liability - Taka Muraoka

I've used it for years and tried many others and I can state with authority that it most definitely is *not* a total piece of crap. It's very good. It's their licensing and pricing that is a total piece of crap, despite that we continue to use it because it's so good. Sorry, but I hate it when people malign things so casually. ------------

One of the issues I've had with report writers is the ability to allow for a header and footer template. I remember that CR supported that capability (unlink Oracle's report tool), but it either didn't work quite right and/or was very difficult to set up. A common thread that I've found in report writers is that they don't seem to understand the concept of re-use. That layout aspects might want to be re-used from report to report. That common SQL queries might want to be re-used. The only other complaint that I can recall is that it crashed frequently. Maybe that problem has been fixed, but it certainly turned me off from the product instantly when I was testing it. Marc Every line of code is a liability - Taka Muraoka

I've used Crystal at two different companies now and I can honestly say it's an ok piece of crap. Unfortunately, it's the best reporting tool for both applications that I've had to use it for. Our current users absolutely hate it. So much so that they brought in an outside analyst to review the program with the intent of getting feedback to use against our decision to use Crystal. Fortunately, the analyst said it was the best thing out there and they've stopped kicking and screaming about it for now.

You work for Crystal ? I would never admit to having that job in public... Maybe you can tell us why Crystal is still the overpriced piece-of-crap at version 9 that it always has been ? Inquiring minds want to know... Steven J.
