The following is an excerpt from a speech President Bush gave in a Washington D.C. Islamic Center this afternoon. Hope this will dispel the anti Muslim and anti South Asian hysteria that we have all seen in the last few days after last Tuesday's tragic incident. "Like the good folks standing with me, the American people were appalled and outraged at last Tuesday's attacks, and so were Muslims all across the world, both Americans, our Muslim friends and citizens, tax-paying citizens, and Muslims in nations were just appalled, could not believe what we saw on our TV screens. These acts of violence against innocents violate the fundamental tenets of the Islamic faith, and it's important for my fellow Americans to understand that. The English translation is not as eloquent as the original Arabic, but let me quote from the Koran itself. 'In the long run, evil in the extreme will be the end of those who do evil. For that they rejected the signs of Allah and held them up to ridicule.' "The face of terror is not the true faith of Islam. That's not what Islam is all about. Islam is peace. These terrorists don't represent peace. They represent evil and war. "When we think of Islam, we think of a faith that brings comfort to a billion people around the world. Billions of people find comfort and solace and peace, and that's made brothers and sisters out of every race -- out of every race. America counts millions of Muslims amongst our citizens, and Muslims make an incredibly valuable contribution to our country. Muslims are doctors, lawyers, law professors, members of the military, entrepreneurs, shopkeepers, moms and dads, and they need to be treated with respect. In our anger and emotion, our fellow Americans must treat each other with respect. "Women who cover their heads in this country must feel comfortable going outside their homes. Moms who wear cover must not be intimidated in America. That's not the America I know. That's not the America I value." [G. W. Bush] More on this can be found in.. http://www.cnn.com/2001/US/09/17/gen.hate.crimes/

Trully beautiful. Maybe someday my country can learn to be as tolerant and peaceful as those of the middle east. We have so much to learn from that very ancient and wise culture with its keenly felt religious sentiments. Thank you, Mr. Bush and you too Mr. Kabir.:(( :rose: "I never met anyone I didn't like" Will Rogers.

Yeah, he has decent speech-writers. Take away his script and he's not quite as eloquent (or diplomatic). Am I the only one who was horrified by his depiction of the coming military campaign as a 'crusade'? Seems to me that if you're trying to gain the cooperation of Islamic countries, that was an unfortunate turn of phrase.:| :| Dave R

Well Said Mr Bush. People seem to have forgotten that Islam means peace. Literally. David Wulff dwulff@battleaxesoftware.com
That is very true David, it is a pity though that the very people who have forgotten this happen to be the one's who profess themselves to be the true followers and believers in Islam. They are the one's that make the rest of the civilised world scorn the very statement "Islam means peace, literally". It is like telling a victim of the Crusades that Christianity is all about forgiveness and tolerance. Not very believable when you are shackled to a wall. Words can mean whatever they want to mean, it is actions above all else that really count. *First off I happen to have personally witnessed Islamic fanatics fighting for "peace" first hand, it is far from moral or honourable. I don't want to start a whole flame war here, I am just commenting and only on a few in millions upon millions Good speech though by Mr. Bush regards, Paul Watson Cape Town, South Africa e: paulmwatson@email.com w: vergen.org

Yes - crusade was a particularly bad word to use given the connotations. cheers, Chris Maunder (CodeProject)

>> Seems to me that if you're trying to gain the cooperation of Islamic countries, that was an unfortunate turn of phrase We should give him credit for what he said. This will certainly help to restore healthy inter-racial relationship in our societies. But hey, there may be other purpose behind his hastily arranged trip. I was reading this Washington Post column on this about what you are pointing to. "At the same time, it buttressed Bush's image as a "compassionate conservative" and earned him praise from leaders of the nation's Muslim and Arab population. A White House official involved in the effort said the two goals are intertwined. "The president wanted to send a strong signal" to American Muslims, the official said, predicting it "certainly will reverberate around the world." // Fazlul

It is the inability of the islamic nations in the middle-east to curb activities of any organization of radical thoughts (read 'terrorist' intent), when it is veiled under Islam, that may be the root cause. It is very unreasonable to conclude that Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Iran, Pakistan, Syria have no intelligence on these organizations, but they do precious little. Why? Why is it left to US, western Europe, Israel, India etc.. which are non-islamic nations? I think they are afraid to do anything because it is done in the name of Islam. Islam is a very sensitive subject and if they try to do something on these organizations, they may be in a very bad position and may even get destabilized. This attack has forced a few of them to give passive support - they will not participate in any attacks. But, they should participate, even if they have no big war machinary, just to send a signal that this is not islam and a very 'opinionated' and 'distorted' way to look at things. I hope they realize this soon. - Thomas
