I keep a sports bottle full of cold water on my desk at work, I've been using it all year. I haven't noticed any plastic dissapearing down my throat, but do boil a kettle and sterilise it with boiling water quite frequently. After all, I use it throughout the day, while eating lunch, etc. If it weren't sterilised it would probably be a full bacteria breeding ground by now :-D

They have been making a big deal about this lately but what I have to ask is when you use a water cooler is it ever cleaned or sterilised? I know the water is colder so there should not be as much bacteria but it exists... John

;I still find this practice amusing. Even more amusing was one morning seeing a water bottle on someone's lawn covered in a nice fresh steaming pile of dog poop. A fairly convincing counter-example I think :) cheers, Chris Maunder

Strange question but Im sure I read somewhere that re-using empty water bottles wasn't healthy, as molecules of plastic start appearing in the water after some time (or something to that effect). Personally I thought this was just the bottle manufacturers making sure people didn't re-cycle too often (more bottles, more money), but I was wondering if the collective-conscience that is CP might know if there was any truth in it?
All plastic leaks out estrogenic compounds, especially soft plastics (like many water bottles) and particularly when exposed to high temperatures (like leaving it in your car). For people with hormone imbalances to begin with, this can just aggrevate already difficult to deal with problems, as these chemicals mimic many estrogen-type hormones that regulate both men's and women's bodies, blocking the natural good functions of these hormones by binding to receptor sites. I hear that sodium cyanide is a much better disinfectant than bleach. Just to be on the safe side, you might also monitor the pH of that first bottle by adding an ounce or so of phenolphthalein. It not only turns pink if the Ph rises too high, but it is also the active ingredient in ExLax.:-D

I wouldn't doubt that it could happen... even the stuff from those non-stick skillets wears off after a while... but I doubt if it happened to an extent that it would do any harm.
