Al Qaida claims responsibility for blackout

This is America, the land of goverment controled media. Do you really believe anything you hear from the networks?
Maybe the US should guard every power transmission pole and installation. If a few lines going down can cause such havoc, imagine what 10 determined operatives could do. Forget the airports, protect the power lines! Cheers Mike Johannesburg, South Africa

Sure, sounds good to me. Maybe we should put road blocks at al entrances to our cities, and while were at it we can put cameras in all of our homes, thats where all the bombs are built ya know. If we control all the people all the time we have it made. Nothing to worry about.

And the software to control the people, developed in India? But what are you then going to do with the Canadians? The are a problem too! Cheers Mike Johannesburg, South Africa

Seems unlikely. It would indicate a sophistication not yet seen in terrorism. An evolution from the idea of flames and body parts to economic disruption. Even the most casual student of terrorism would acknowledge that the major factor in terrorism is 'terror'. I'm sorry but the loss of a billion dollars here or there isn't 'terror'. To you or I a billion dollars is a lot. To an economy the size of the USA it's rather less than a drop in the bucket. Especially when it's not 'real' money anyway. So no - I cannot subscribe to this theory. Rob Manderson http://www.mindprobes.net

I live in Phoenix Arizona and have recently visited Manhattan (I'd move there in a second if I had the chance - I loved it!!). A few months ago (during the early weeks of the US invasion of Iraq (with which I don't agree but until I get the vote here my opinion doesn't count for much)) my wife hinted at doubts about her safety here in Arizona. Apart from the Intel plant at Chandler I see no reason to believe that Phoenix is going to be a terrorist target. Why? Just look at the difference between Manhattan and Phoenix. Manhattan goes up and up and up. Phoenix just goes out and out and out. I think the reason the WTC was a target was the sheer number of people concentrated in a small space. Hit a 110 storey office building with a fully fuelled 757 and you get a lot of dead people. Hit Phoenix with the same plane and you get a large scar in the ground. So I believe the intent is to kill people. Blackout 2003 killed so few people that it hasn't even hit the news. Ergo, not a very believable theory. Rob Manderson http://www.mindprobes.net

The IRA had moved towards economic terrorism before entering into peace negotiations. Their bombs were targeted at the financial areas of London. Primarily to cause great expense and loss of confidence in London as a financial centre. It certainly caused great expense and tragically cost several people their lives. It is potentially, a very effective form of terrorism since governments tend to care more about the economy than the lives of a few of their citizens. I doubt whether the blackout was terrorism though.

Rob Manderson wrote: target Intel As Dan said the IRA approach to target towns with economic targets gets them noticed and worries civilians. Taking a large plant out is difficult. During one of the IRA campains years ago I was an apprentice with the MOD, we had to road test a van so we went shopping in the local town, parking was a problem, but there was plenty of space when we came back, it had "bomb disposal" written on the side. People were obviously caucious, the bombing campaign was therefore working!

People can't seriously be considering that. It is silly. The paper reads like a high school prank. "Ummmm, we did it, but we aren't going to tell you how because..... um weellllll because." "Terrorism could be the only cause since the whole grid failed and that just doesn't happen. Well, um, like if you ignore the blackouts in the 60s and 70s and the California blackout in the 90s. Like dude, it never happens on a large scale. We had to do it." Oh PLEEEEEEEEEASE people. Tim Smith I'm going to patent thought. I have yet to see any prior art.

Phoenix a target? Who'd miss it? As you say, it's far too spread out, and the misery of actually living there far exceeds any that an enemy could inflict. We have people here who are terrified that terrorists might strike - here! LOL!!! All we have is a dam, and while blowing that dam would certainly kill a few thousand people and inconvenience electricity users in LA, it would be a waste of explosives. There are far juicier targets in almost any state other than Arizona, especially the Coast states.

Tim Smith wrote: reads like a high school prank. Exactly. Blackouts happen, and the causes are usually simple. We had one here a few years ago, causes by something so simple as an untrimmed tree in the Northwest somewhere shorting a high tension line. The infrastructure isn't nearly as robust as the power companies would like us to believe, and it doesn't take a terrorist to take it down.
