Visit Venice, they moved it Gondola by Gondola from Italy to Las Vegas... in the desert... I am still bitter about the American woman who thought Venice really was in Las Vegas and not Italy...

Actually, it's funny that you bring up Italy because I just made plans to head there next year for a few weeks. Looks like I'll be cracking open that "Italian for Dummies" book again. I refuse to be one of those ignorant tourists that can't speak to anyone. I'll just be ignorant in another language. ;P -Mike Zinni "No shit it's tough. Hey, are there any CPians out in the Las Vegas, Nevada area? I'm going to be heading out there this Friday for 5 days and wouldn't mind some first hand advice on things to do and places to go at night. I'm not a very big gambler, so I'm thinking the nightlife is going to get the best of me. Thanks. -Mike Zinni "No shit it's tough. I'm about 100 miles away, down here on the edge of hell, and Vegas is the nearest thing to a big town available. If you're not a gambler, you're smart - they didn't build those huge casinos by paying off winners. All over The Strip there are shows - lots of has beens like Wayne Newton, Don Rickles, etc. Some of the smaller clubs have some interesting burlesque shows - one I recall was a tribute to the Beatles, though I've never figured out what ten nubile, topless dancing girls had to do with the Fab Four. Still, they were good dancers, the show was entertaining and affordable, and I've never been one to refuse to admire natural female adornments whenever presented to me. There are numerous other attractions - parachuting inside a building, for instance. And there's a roller coaster that is built on top of a building. Circus Circus still has great shows, and they're free. Great chili can be found at a greasy spoon across the street from the Riviera, and there are plenty of pubs where you can drown your boredom and play pool or darts. Have fun, and beware flash floods. Oh, and I'll second the recommendation for Venice - it's a must see.

See the fountain show at the Bellagio - that is a must-see. See the Luxor - its cool to walk inside a pyramid. See Cirque du Soleil's Mystere at the Treasure Island. Its a bit pricey (around $80) but its a wonderful show. Take the hard-hat tour of the Hoover Dam (ask at the desk at your hotel). Ride to the top of the Eiffel tower at the Paris and to the top of the Statosphere. Play craps at the Horseshoe (downtown). Now that's a gamblin' hall. Go bowling at Sam's Town. You can bowl where the PBA has tournaments.

Can't recomment any entertainment, as I gambled pretty much whole time I was there, but for eating definitely go to New Orleans Fish House in the MGM Grand. It's one of Emeril Lagasse's restaurants (if you ever watch TV cooking shows you know who Emeril is). It was very good food and great dining experience. You do have to make reservations. Prepare to drop about $40-$60 per person.

Last weekend when I was entering vegas on the I-15 I could see the streaks of lightning over the city. It rained heavily last saturday for abt 1-2 hrs, me and my wife got drenched X|. I heard abt the Flash Floods yesterday http://www.cnn.com/2003/WEATHER/08/19/vegas.storms.ap/index.html[^] , so thats the first thing you should see if there is any more expected. Hey I won enough ;P quarters for a mnths laundry(although I lost more ) My superstition/theory:--> Don't sit too long on any slot machine(i.e. if you do slots). Well I lived here all my life, and I would show you around, but I am moving to Redmond! Anyways, here is a vegas natives ideas... At night, see the fountains at the Bellagio, other people have said this and it is definitely true. Cruise the Vegas strip at night, preferably in a convertible. See the white tigers and gardens at the Mirage. Also take the other guys advice and go see Mystere, or Siegfried and Roy, or Blue Man Group. Danny Gans is really good too. Go to some clubs. I like Studio 54, also if you want to go all night there is the after hours club at the Barbary Coast called Drais or Seven on the strip (neither of which really get started till about 2 in the morning). If you are a trek geek, go to the Hilton and check out the Star Trek experience. Dont bother with Fremont Street, unless you are into bums and prostitutes, the light show is not worth it. But if you like pool and midnight cosmic bowling and games, Jillians down there is fun but expensive. Got to Red Rock and hike during the day if you are up for it. Well those are some suggestion, have fun! Cleve Littlefield Senior Developer Visual Office (well, Microsoft next week...)

Heh. For much the same reason I took two terms of Italian at the local community college before vacationing in Rome last year. I must have looked too obviously American, however, because most didn't even give me time to stumble through a greeting in Italian before launching into English themselves. (Either that or they just pointed at various things figuring, being a big dumb American tourist, the best I'd be able to do was grunt and nod when they eventually pointed at whatever I wanted. ;P) Playing the big dumb American tourist did come in handy once, though, when we were riding the public trolleys and the ticket police descended on the car just as the doors closed. My brother and I apparently hadn't bought the right kind of tickets. One police officer tried to explain that fact to us in Italian and by gesturing wildly, but after only getting blank stares back from either of us, he finally gave up and let us continue on our way. -Jag Jag T.
