I am Laptop shopping, and I noticed that AMD chips are much cheaper than Intel chips. I am seriously considering an AMD based laptop because of this. Could someone give me some advice to help me decide? Thanks!

AMDs are cheaper, and run faster overall, but they run hotter. Intels are better for high-speed streaming, and are cooler, but they're more expensive and somewhat slower overall than AMDs.

Could the heat cause problems? I live in a very hot climate.

In a desktop, it'll be OK as long as you have a good fan system. In a laptop, I'd advise against it.

I've read of at least one person who suffered serious leg burns from this, though it's hard to imagine anyone being stupid enough to keep an object hot enough to burn on his lap long enough to do real damage. Hopefully one of the side effects of the burn was to prevent his breeding.
