Here's one that I haven't found any answers to, including the manufacturers and "expert" sales people, so I'll defer to the gurus here at The Lounge.... I want to use a USB webcam as a cheap video camera, not as a webcam. I'm thinking of something like a Logitech QuickCam or similar. Virtually all have fixed-focus lenses. Question is: can these webcams focus on "infinity" or are they purely designed for close focal length (i.e. 2-3 ft from PC monitor to chair). I do some amateur car racing and want to setup one or two webcams as a "racecam" -- maybe one on the dashboard, another closer to the road near the front bumper (hence the requirement for a cheap camera!) 320x240 quality is enough for me, I don't need broadcast quality. Maybe I should just go and try myself, but I'd be interested to know if anyone here has setup a similar configuration. cheers Andrew

Thanks for the link John. The webcams I looked at (e.g. QuickCam Pro xxxx) did not have the manual focus. I might try this one. John Cardinal wrote: What do you race? Stocks, rally, bracket / drag? Don't tell my insurance company, but I'm in a few car clubs that have track days on proper race courses (so for insurance purposes, we're not really "racing" ;)). At this time of year, there's almost one event every week (in Colorado). I have an Audi S4 with a "few" modifications :-D

Try the Mustek V2000 (I think). About £70 GBP, or Mobileshop.com were giving them away free with Vodaphone mobiles a while back. Only really of use if in the UK tho.... "Now I guess I'll sit back and watch people misinterpret what I just said......" Christian Graus At The Soapbox
