Just a couple of pics I took with a digi camera at Banham zoo in the UK (they're quite big though!): For our American friends: BaldEagle[^] Quite unnerving stood taking the picture so close to this eagle. It was absolutely huge, and as you can see, those talons and that beak are formidable weapons  A snow leopard: Snow Leopard[^] Not nice seeing such a creature behind bars, but zoos do serve a useful function, and Banham zoo really does seem to make the effort required - the cage was huge, well planted, with plenty to climb on, plus he had a few friends there as well :) "The folly of man is that he dreams of what he can never achieve rather than dream of what he can." Beautiful shot of the eagle. But kind of sad to seem him roped down like that. :((

Beautiful Bird!! Does he usually live in an aviary ? I hope the ropes are only temporary :-(

Amazing ! I can see that snow leopard thinking "And when I get out its those two for lunch." Elaine :rose: The tigress is here :-D
Funny thing is, the leopards (and all the other big cats) were completely uninterested in the public. The one I got the pic of was only so close to the bars because he'd heard a keeper walking past with a trolley. He obviously thought there was a chance of some food - typical of any cat, as any cat owner would know ;) The rest were just lying under trees, with the only sign of life being the occasional flick of their tails. They are absolutely fantastic looking though, almost unreal when you see them up close. "The folly of man is that he dreams of what he can never achieve rather than dream of what he can." Nice pics. There are so many bald eagles here in this part of the world you have to beat them off with a stick when you're out fishing. (not literally) American tourists are endlessly fascinated with them and completely surprised to find that they are not in fact nearly extinct but thriving in abundance, but you have to go to Canada to see them! .

Snow Leopard: An estimated 3,500-7,000 left in the wild Approximately 600-700 in zoos around the world Listed on the World Conservation Union’s (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species as Endangered, the same classification as the panda and the tiger See: http://www.snowleopard.org/[^] jhaga --------------------------------- I have discovered that all human evil comes from this, man's being unable to sit still in a room. Agreed, but then it's sad to see any animal caged or whatever. As I said though, zoos do have an important role to play in conservation (IMO) and the eagle shown, does get to fly around in the open air as Banham zoo make a point of doing daily displays with their wild birds, so at least the birds get exercise just as nature intended. I don't blame them for being so fascinated. Up close they are an incredible sight. There's definite intelligence in those eyes, and they are just so impressive looking as well. Hardly surprising the US chose it for their national symbol. I just regret having missed the display as I'd have loved to see this creature flying. It's also the Kangaroo effect. I've always been very fascinated with Kangaroos, would love to see one, even in a zoo, but Australians put bars on the front of their trucks to bounce them out of the way. You would probably love a salmon fishing trip to Vancouver Island sometime, you will see more eagles than you can shake a stick at and your guide will take you to places where you can watch them swoop down and grab a salmon that's almost as big as they are out of the water. Plus the usual black bears, whales, dolphins, seals, etc. This place is one of the best in our area: http://www.painterslodge.com/index.htm[^]
