Billion? Huh?
-
:-) The last week saw a few arguments between Brits and Americans about the Billion. Just thought it'd be interesting to mention the Indian counting system. 100,000 = 1 lakh (100 thousand) 10,000,000 = 1 crore (10 million) Thus we have 1 crore = 100 lakhs In american terms 1 lakh = 100 thousand 1 million = 10 lakhs 1 crore = 10 million 1 billion = 100 crores BTW we even have a different separator system :- 1 lakh is written as 1,00,000 3 lakhs is 3,00,000 1 crore is 1,00,00,000 2 crores and 75 lakhs is 2,75,00,000 Hope you guys find this useful next time you read about an Indian making crores :-) Regards Nish

I would love to see the worksheet for someone doing orbital mechanics with this system. No wonder India is not a space power yet. :) If we ( the US ) can foul up a 140 million dollar martian shot by mixing math parameters up by using metric in places it wasn't expected just think what one could do with this system. If you forget the names, it's only the placement of commas that's different. :) 1 million = 1,000,000 10 lakhs = 10,00,000 Maths doesn't know names and commas, does it? Only values. :) Oh, and about the space thing. India is one of the six countries in the world that have the capability of sending a satellite into space. So basically we provide "taxi service" to others. And we have started making our own satellites too. And by 2007-2008, we should be able to reach the moon, unmanned though, it's the first time. Links: India To Offer Cheaper Taxi Rides Into Space With Polar Launcher[^] Moon mission could launch India's space career[^] Hey, India is only 56 years old, cut us some slack. I think we are doing quite well for such a young nation. :)

Things will be really different in just 20 years time. But of course, it'll take us many more years for us to catch up with the really advanced nations. Did you know that India makes the 3rd fastest supercomputers (Japan, US and India, in that order)? Have you heard about Simputers? It's being claimed that we found some cure or the other for AIDS, though that still needs to be tested on humans. Apparantly it works on animals. We're gonna rock the world soon! What keeps pulling India down is the huge population, illiteracy, corruption, poverty, etc. Our welfare budget is so damn high it eats up all we make. Two faces of the same country.

By educating people we cut down on population, and hopefully people become smart enough not to vote for the same assholic robbers they elected the previous few times, whose only role was in stealing the people's money! The key is education. Must educate the masses. All of them! Nish

100% agreed, Nish, this is what I keep saying myself all the time. Education is the key. It'll bring awareness, most importantly. People will learn to stand up for their rights. Produce less children, and instead concentrate on giving them a better life. That, and shoot all the politicians aged above 40. All of them. Without discrimination. And then some of them below 40 too. Reason being not their age, but that the particular crop to which they belong is corrupt beyond all repair. And our justice system takes years to do anything at all. Look at Advani, for example. On 12th September, the court will decide whether or not to frame charges against him and if so, what. It's been almost 13 years, dammit. 13 years to frame charges! The man will die of old age before any judgement is passed upon him. Damn. They all need to die. That, or make a law forbidding all politicians undergoing trial to contest any elections. If they really want to serve the country, they don't need to contest the elections, do they?
