ok so here we go... trying to install xp on a laptop with a blank hdd ... got the cdrom (usb) working and start setup (i386\winnt) ... copies files for a bit then just stops got a dos network connection to my laptop and copied the whole frigging i386 folder to the new laptop (very tedious) and run i386\winnt from the local drive ... copies files for a bit then just stops tried a network install ... copies files for a bit then just stops like WTF!!!!! anybody got any clue wtf is going on??? :wtf:
The autodetection process is foobaring up. PROBABLY the network card detection - I've had all flavors of windows totally puke on various laptops due to network cards. If the nic is built-in, try disabling it in the BIOS. Otherwise, pull it. Also make sure you've reset the bios to factory settings. Failing that, seriously consider installing Win 2000. It's more compatable than XP is, generally (this is the same problem we had when 2K was released - nothing would work with it, so we had to stick with Win98...)

Hop on MSN - I've got the installation instructions from 'Mastering WinXP Professional' sitting next to the PC. Maybe we can walk through the steps in it and make it go.

Questions: 1) What hardware is installed/attached? 2) What FS is the drive formatted with? 3) Did you format it yourself, or did it come formatted? 3.1) If yes, did you do a quick format? 4) What make is the laptop? 5) How old is the laptop? 6) Do you have any of the manufacturer's software available? Thoughts: Try installing Win2k & see if that has the same problem. If not, then upgrade, if so, keep looking.

my 2c... 1) perhaps there is bad sector on the HD, or... 2) installing something called SeedDisk (if I recall name correctly - not sure if I do) can improve drastically the copy of files) 3) once I had similar problem, it turned out that the XP Setup did not like my CD that I burned (it stopped mid way), but it worked fine if I try installing form the original CD. ^Say no more :rolleyes: I run 2000 on all my machines, at least they install. Any XP machines I did have never worked on my Domain or decided to delete themselves every so often. As for Linux....I'm not happy with that either.[^]

As a matter of fact, the user interface is beginning to have a functionality very, very close to Windows. No more mounting/unmounting drives; you can plug in a usb device and it automatically finds it. Give it a try

Had that exact same copy with a corporate edition of Win XP Pro, we just had to make several backup copies until one of them worked

A while ago I was going to reinstall a friends computer which had started to act a bit strange. I wiped the primary partition and started installing from a XP Pro CD. The install would halt at different places, saying it could not find some files. The files were on the CD and were readable in another computer. We tried for fun using a Windows 2003 eval CD, but no luck there either. Finally, we popped the case open and saw that the CPU fan had gotten stuck, and I can tell you, a 1200 Athlon gets pretty hot when ran without cooling. After repairing the fan, we could get a bit longer in the install, but it would still stop. I started suspecting the memory, so I produced a 512MB SDRAM stick from the dark corners of my room, and tried it. The install went flawlessly. Apparently the memory stick closest to the CPU had gotten damaged by the heat radiated from the heatsink. Memtest86 wouldn't detect any errors on it, but as soon as we removed it, the computer worked. So, what I'm trying to say here is: Try checking your RAM with memtest86. I suspect that your memory is corrupt. Also, make sure your laptop aren't overheating.
