Dual monitors

Hi gang, I posted a message a couple of weeks ago about my 17" Samsung LCD monitor starting to fritz. It hasn't totally died, but just hiccups once in a while. I was at Costco yesterday and figured it was worth $350 USD for one of their Princeton 17" LCDs. I got it home and it's a beaut! :) So I'm thinking, gee I've never tried a dual monitor config on my Win2K system and since the Samsung is still functional, why not give 'er a spin? I scrounged a spare video card and put it in the last remaining slot in my dev system and, holy cow, it worked right off the bat! I just gotta say that I don't care how much some folks bash MSFT (not here on CP, of course), I am just totally impressed by how easy it was to set up dual monitors, and the fact that MSFT thought it would be such a worthwhile feature. You made a big mistake. Just wait till you have to use a single monitor on some box, after using dual at home for a while. You'll be crying :((

Try and get video overlay working correctly on dual monitors (single card / dual head) Or Direct3D then you might not be so impressed. It's a big kludgy mess. Why oh why can't the two monitors just be treated as hardware viewports into a single device / desktop !!!

Yup, dual monitors are great. Works brilliantly with everything except DirectX stuff you run at a different resolution to your desktop. -- Ian Darling "The moral of the story is that with a contrived example, you can prove anything." - Joel Spolsky

The Matrox Parhelia has a stretched desktop feature which is exactly what you are asking for. It gives you a nice wide desktop in your resolution of choice. The only limitation is that both monitors must have the same refresh rate and resolution. Gaming or coding in 3840x960 is bliss.

Are you sure that is really a single device underneath ? I can with a geforce4 setup a 4096 * 1536 desktop. And with dx9 and fs2004 finally even setup a 4096 * 1536 virtual cockpit. But I think there is a lot of paddling going on under the water. :suss:
