Visio and UML

Does anyone know how to make Visio let me just draw some darn UML diagrams? I don;t want all the fancy code generation junk. I don't want it to validate my UML. I just want it to provide me with a nice drawing surface and the shapes needed. Let me do what I want! :mad:

Yeah I hate it too, all these damned UML tools a bloody dialog pops up that requires more input than is required the code the app in the first place :mad::doh: leppie::AllocCPArticle("Zee blog");

I would like to find ANY tool that would allow me to do what you described. Rational Rose is even worse than Visio, and Visio is among the top worst MS product I have ever tried (together with Internet Explorer and Access). Would you believe that in 21st century I still draw diagrams on paper? :doh:

I don't know the answer to your question, but I have investigated cheap ways of doing UML models and I've tried this which has a free version: http://argouml.tigris.org/[^] and it works, but I ultimately bought this: http://www.sparxsystems.com.au/[^] And it works well enough.

Works "well enough?" :omg: I tried almost every UML tool on http://www.objectsbydesign.com/tools/umltools_byCompany.html[^] and not only does EA blow them all away, it's one of the lowest in price! It's a paradox, but one that made me a happy customer. Disclaimer: I have no disclaimer; just a satisfied customer. :cool:

Ahhh...well enough because it's got very bad documentation for someone starting out with UML. I know they don't purport to teach you how to use it, but their sample diagram could be improved a billion percent easily. Other than that, it's an excellent product they are very responsive to support, price is really good, they wisely use ShareIT.com to process their payments as we do ;) and they're Australian to boot, what's not to like?;P

Wierd by the way how Enterprise ARchitect was there for so many years and along comes Microsoft and releases "Visual Studio Enterprise Architect". I wonder who was first and when the lawsuits are are coming? I know I would sue if it was me, who cares if it's Microsoft, the law is the law, but on the other hand maybe Sparx was not smart enough to get a U.S. trademark first?

Yup, it can engineer code for you, build SQL databases etc. I personally don't use it that much, my business partner does the UML documentation, and she was the one that complained about the sample diagram, but other than that it seems to do the job very well and the price is nice.

I am using the one that comes with VS.NET 2003. I know, I know.. what the heck did I expect right?

Simply excellent: Poseidon for UML at www.gentleware.com[^]. They have a gratis Community Edition (limited edition) and commercial versions (Standard, Professional, etc. Even a special Embedded Edition for such work). They released a new major version (2.0) last week which is really great. -- Human beings, who are almost unique in having the ability
to learn from the experience of others, are also remarkable
for their apparent disinclination to do so. (Douglas Adams) -

Visio is great for designing databases/systems, knocking out floor plans and producing screen mockups and general diagrams for projects. As for UML use, I just use it for drafting out the aspects of a system before I work on it so I know how things relate - probably not what it was designed for?
