Spectacles

Hi all, I have been having frequent headaches recently, especially after long hours in front of the monitor and I went for a check up at the eye doc. And it seems my eye sight is perfect. But the doc said maybe I can use a 0.5 specs, so that it will enable better viewing, thereby reducing the strain on my eye. She said I need to use it only when I am using computers or while reading books. I chose a frame and have placed the order for the specs. I am going to collect it today afternoon. I am unsure what the specs will do to my looks :-O I am not sure how many of you use specs for this kind of a purpose. I think I will use it for a while and see if its really useful :~ Cheers Smitha You are never given a wish without also being given the power to make it true. Probably the best things you can do to reduce eye strain while using a monitor for long periods are to increase refresh rate, and to look away for a short time every so often. I used to get terrible headaches after periods of computer use, and a better refresh rate all but eliminated them. :)

Nothing worse than watching the tv without a remote, I have seen a generic remote control from sony which can control most tv's, if your tv is not very old you can try that as an option. Usually I have seen people recommend wearing a anti-glare type of glasses, to me 0.5 seems to be a power you should wear only if you have some vision problems. Meanwhile did you do the computerised test or the general ones, i've been adviced to do it bothways to double check, computerised tests can be sometimes wrong. You have just reminded me for visiting the eye-doctor, its been ages since I did my last check up, in fact I dont remember the last time. The mere thought of imagining me with spectacles makes me feel bad. Regards, Kannan

Try upping your refresh rate. I used to keep my 15" and then my work 17" at 85. My home 17" I keep at 75 cause the card does not support 85 :-( And my laptop LCD is at 60 but for LCDs 60 is quite good. Nish

I adjusted the refresh rate now. I think I should see my monitor manual and see the best supported rate. The monitor settings [when the "clear unsupported refresh rates" checkbox is checked] lists 85 Hz as the max. value. But I set it now at 75 Hz. Will 85Hz be safe? Yup, without the remote life sometimes is so meaningless  I will look out for the sony option and get one for me at the earliest possible. Kannan Kalyanaraman wrote: to me 0.5 seems to be a power you should wear only if you have some vision problems :((:((:(( But the doc told me to use it only while reading and using computers. I'd do anything to get the prob cleared out. And reagrding the test, they made me read those letters, with glasses of various power and that should be a manual testing. But the doc did look into my eyes through a huge instrument, which seemed to me like a computerised eye testing equipment :-D Kannan Kalyanaraman wrote: The mere thought of imagining me with spectacles makes me feel bad. Why, try it and see! Monitor settings are all about poking and prodding until you find the sweet spot, so see how high you can crank it and still get a sharp, stable image. Back in the day, i ran my 14" monitor at 940x680@78Hz routinely (of course, this was in Linux, XFree86, which let you easily do that sort of thing). If nothing else, 75Hz isn't bad - try it for a couple days & see how your eyes feel when all is said and done.

Watch out! It's a myth that the highest setting is the best, if you look carefully, you will notice that the higher you set it the more faded and washed out the image will appear which I don't doubt could lead to yet more eyestrain.

You set it as high as you wish as long as it's above 60hz and there is no noticeable flicker. Ideally, you set it as high as you can, take a look, go one notch down, take a look until you have the sharpest non-faded picture and no flicker....actually, the hell with it, just set it to 75hz and you'll be fine!:-D Of course you don't want to take too much advice from me, I wear glasses / contact lenses and if I didn't I literally could not see more than 6 inches in front of me clearly. You would make life difficult for your monitor if you put a higher refresh rate than your monitor can support. I had it at 75 and after shog's post I changed to 85, but didn't see any change. Regards, Kannan
