Because he's not Gray Davis and not a Democrat. The Car Tax (Vehicle Licensing Fees) are set to TRIPLE tomorrow. More fuel for the Arnold campaign.

"Speaking from the Whitehouse for the first time, the new president once again pledged his pre-election promise to tackle the country's escalating drug problem. President Schwarzenegger announced that he was personally going to South America, and that he'd be back." (Taken from a Toyota advert on the radio) Anyway... Yes! I can remember that! Stalone seemed very upset about the fact and said something like "Put me back in the fridge!". They also said that the constitution was changed in order to allow a not US-native person to be the president. Let's wait a few years and see if this can happen too!

The fee was cut to one third of its normal rate a few years ago, when California's state revenue was at an all-time high due to all the dot-coms we had. This particular income source to the state was being given back to the counties and cities in exchange for the local revenue lost back in '78 from the passage of Ca. Proposition 13. When the economy was booming, there was pressure to give a break to all the car-owners by reducing the fee; the idea was that the local revenue stream was doing just fine without this source. Thinking ahead :omg:, our legislature included in the act reducing the fee a trigger to raise it again if the economy soured. Guess, what, that has now occurred, so the fee went back up. The only part that Gov. Davis played in all this was to pull the trigger by an executive order, rather than waiting for the legislature to handle this detail. He knew that was not going to happen, given the Republican attitude of avoiding all tax increases (even though this is not really a tax) and he needed to restore a revenue source to the state to make up for the recent losses. Hope this helps straighten things out. 'til next we type... HAVE FUN!! -- Jesse

That's right, I'd forgotten Stalone's response, but I remember he looked shocked. Glad I'm not the only person who remembers that movie, it's not exactly a "classic" ;)

Sorry, I missed that. Still, this issue gets to me more than most because very few people have taken the time to really understand it. (Of course that's because most people would rather watch a Friends re-run than think about politics, even though politics has a much greater impact on their lives.) Gov. Davis gets slammed for tripling the tax, when in reality he merely took the heat for the legislature by returning it to its previous level himself because that's what the law, passed by that same legislature, said is supposed to be done and the members of the legislature are too timid (or partisan) to make the tough decisions.
