Philosophical rant - Some fun on the road?

Hi, Some time ago, I decided to take some advanced driving lessons. Mainly because I felt I could use the practice and also because I bought a more powerful car, hence more responsibility (this could be an advertisement slogan :) ) With all the electronic safety applications getting more and more mainstream, you don't feel like driving a car anymore. You drive 70 mph and have the feeling it is not really fast. The suspension filters all the bumps in the road. The sound isolation is so good you hardly can hear anything. Cars are getting heavier and ‘safer’. Only when you bump into something (or someone) this fact and the enormous amount of potential energy becomes very real. Surprise. I am now hooked on the speed sensation thing (my car) . So in fact, the advanced driving course accomplished the exact opposite of my original intention. An additional side effect (from what I have seen on the driving course and experienced on the race track) is that I am now - more than ever - convinced that 90% of car owners just can't drive. :~ Some snow or just ordinary rain… and the result is clear. :( This has nothing to do with knowing the traffic rules or driving carefully, but with anticipation and car control. Should electronic driving aids be banned? I think so. :-O I refer to the danger of the so-called 'cruise control'. Also, a driver's license should not be 'given' to anyone. Am I too extreme? Probably just seen to many idiots on the road this evening… :rose: -------------------------------------------------- If my messages appear curt, I apologize. I try to be brief to save your time as well as mine. --------------------------------------------------

The problem with cruise control is that it is easier and you WILL loose attention. Just because it makes life or a car trip easier does not mean it is a great invention. Lately, a lot of trucks are slamming in the tail of traffic jams with devastating effects. Of course (most of the time), it is the truck driver's fault, but this is now happening more than without cruise control. Without cruise control, the driver’s feet would hurt (like yours) and he or she would take a break and rest a bit. 20 minutes later – after the break – the driver will have more attention, the road is a lot safer. -------------------------------------------------- If my messages appear curt, I apologize. Sweet wheels! I have a Subaru Imprezza WRX and I have a healthy respect for it. One of the issues with it that I think results in a lot of accidents when "kids" buy these things is that it has the ultimate driver aid: all time 4 wheel drive. There is very little understeer or oversteer to warn you that you need to take action, it's basically sticking to the road like a spider until the exact moment that you take it too far then it's an "agricultural excursion". I like the all wheel drive, but I wish they could fine tune it to the point where you could get the good (in advance) under steer feeling so you know exactly how far to take it. (it's probably designed for a little understeer as most cars are when they roll off the assembly line but in effect it's almost too quick to take advantage of) The value of cruise control is directly corrolated with your local geography. Here in North America, it's not uncommon to drive on long straight highways for several hours at a time. I like it because it stops me from accidentally speeding; the Subaru has a pretty snappy turbo and it's all too easy to look down and realize your waaaayy over the speed limit without realizing it. Personally I think everyone should have easy access to "advanced" driving instruction where they can take their car that they drive everyday and practice driving in more extreme conditions so that they know instinctively what to do. I know in England it's common practice for the local race track to allow people to bring their cars onto the track on certain days of the week and have at it for a small fee, but here in Canada, at least, it's unheard of and the only way to get any track time is in a Go-kart or through stock car style racing where you have to modify a specific type of car to specific specifications for safety reasons.
Here in my car I feel safest of all I can lock all my doors It's the only way to live in cars. Here in my car I can only receive I can listen to you It keeps me stable for days in cars.

Ban stuff like ABS, ESP and the like? Those things save lives. Cruise control should be for out on a long road, not during traffic. Plus cruise control on some more modern cars is now active, keeping a safe following distance with the car in front. Active yaw control, power distribution, all those things are fantastic in the wet, sending power to the wheels with grip. For most people in most driving situations, they are of great help. I doubt many of us could have handled an original 911 in the wet, now that they have added electronics you can plant your foot and not end up wrapped around a tree. Agreed if you are pushing your car to the limits then they get in the way (thats why they have those "turn off helpful paper clip" buttons), but then when you are pushing your car you are not exactly being safe anyway. regards, Paul Watson Bluegrass South Africa Miszou wrote: I have read the entire internet. on how boring his day was. for ABS, I agree (great invention) but you can still stop faster without (if you are a very very good driver) . ESP and the like, I am not so sure: ESP will solve a lot of the problems you are not even aware of (if ESP was not there you would start to feel it - hopefully gradually ). The problem is that when the electronics can no longer solve it, there is no hint (except for the stupid flickering ESP warning light) for the driver anymore: The situation has become incorrectable. Instead of helping a bad driver with electronics, should the driver not learn how to control his car for himself? I am totally against cruise control. Driving is dangerous and requires your full attention, always! Check the insurance company statistics: more accidents with cruise controlled cars. I am not against electronics all together: Airconditioning on the other hand is great - it makes the environment more pleasant and raises the attention level. Cars without airconditiong have more chance of getting into an accident on a hot day. -------------------------------------------------- If my messages appear curt, I apologize. I always liked the bumper sticker "Ban low performance drivers, not high performance cars". A buddy of mine who does a lot of driving for his job goes to one of those schools every year. His company pays for the course and pays for his car insurance. They get a significant discount because of this. His insurance is about 2/3 of mine and I am a twenty year accident free / ticket free driver. Chris Meech If you spin a Chinese person around, do they become dis-oriented? nonsense. what's the diff between stepping on a pedal or pressing a button. anytime i drive a ford vehicle for an extended period of time, i drive with my hands (they put the cruise control on the steering wheel, instead of the turn signal ((are u listening gm)). i can slow down and accelerate with my fingers. it's only braking that requires my foot. for most long trips on highways, full braking isn't required. my current vehicle doesn't have cruise and i really miss it! then why does formula 1, Indy and who knows what other racing series use abs? initially this was true, a driver that knew how to brake could stop faster. not the case anymore! Josef Wainz Software Developer

A lot of people take 2 or 3 attempts to pass the English driving test, so passing first time is viewed as quite an achievement among your peers. On the other hand, When I took my California driving test, I had a heated argument with my driving examiner, involving whether I had to slow down when approaching an intersection, even though I was on the "major" road. She told me to slow down at least 3 times and I still drove through the interections too fast. I also failed to look properly when performing my 3-point turn. Amazingly, I passed! If that test had occurred in England, the examiner would probably have halted the test early and driven me back to the test center in disgrace. A friend recently failed his UK driving test again - because he didn't click on enough road hazards during a driving simulation. In California, you don't have to do anything remotely difficult: No reversing round a corner, no parallel parking - and look at the ridiculously oversized vehicles that people drive here... As you say, they'll give a driving license to just about anyone - including illegal immigrants it seems. But don't even get me started about that...
