Anybody know of a good backup program that will write its backup data to a hard drive, and can use an user alias when accessing network folders? I.E. Everybody at my company has an online folder that only they, and a special backup account, have access to. I need a backup program that can logon under the backup account to access the files. Veritas BackupExec does this, but only backs up to tape (unless I missed something). Any ideas? Thanks in advance. Kyosa Jamie Nordmeyer - Cho Dan Portland, Oregon, USA

We just changed from BackupExec to Commvault Galaxy http://www.commvault.com[^] It does backup to magnetic media, and it's restore functionality is the best I've ever seen. And, no I don't work for them. :) Email me if you want more details about what this solutions can do. Or, let me know and I'll post the laundry list here. Just use the NT Backup (ntbackup.exe) utility. It comes with windows, and is not all that difficult to use. It is perfect for backing up to a file. Peter

So you want to backup the data to a disk and access the data from within the backup program itself?

Well, if it backed up in to a .ZIP file, that would be fine, too. But that's the general idea. Plus being able to impersonate another user (the backup user, in this case). Kyosa Jamie Nordmeyer - Cho Dan Portland, Oregon, USA

The newest version of BackupExec (not yet released) will have a new feature called "Desktop and Laptop Option" that may do what you need. It backs up files from user computers to a network share. If you want more info immediately, you'll need to contact VERITAS sales. Otherwise, keep checking the Web site[^] for a release date and other information.

Correct John ... Veritas Version 9.0 backs up to disk although windows 2000 nt backup also backs up to disk which you might want to look at first . About the account ....We have the local Administrators group having full control on all shares on our server . Then we create a Domain account and place it in the local admins account .We use this account for all backups on the servers . We don't give users full control on any shares because they could cause problems .. Hope that helps .. Chris
