Hi there, I am somehow interested to join a competition in my country. I check the requirements. The team must submit an outline of an innovative business idea that involves the use of IT in such a way that it leads to the creation of a successful business venture or company. The idea can be a product, a service or something that can create value or income, increase sales, or reduce costs. It may consist of entirely new products or services or it could just be a new way to do old things. The use of IT in a significant way to assist the development or operation of the business idea is compulsory, however the product or service itself does not need to be IT-related. Judging will be based on the creativity of the business idea and how IT is creatively used. --> Hmm.. how should i get started? Send in a business plan or what? I don't really understand the meaning on it. Any tips? If write business ideas, any good format or samples which i can use as a references? Any help? If i was to submit a game as an idea, maybe a first person shooter game like halo, is that counted as original idea? Thanks. Regards, Chua Wen Ching :p

I think that if you come up with a good idea, it will become apparent how to present it. If you can't present it, you haven't thought it through enough. The difference between a pessimist and an optimist is that while the pessimist is always a victim, the optimist is always a target. - Brady Kelly

A FPS shooter game is not an original business idea. Actually, it is not even a business idea; it’s at best, a product idea. Business ideas don’t focus on good products: they focus on getting money. See Lotus Notes: as a product, it sucks big time, but Lotus and IBM make big cash with it. Sure, if you have a great product, you’ll probably sell more, which means it’ll be easier for you to be profitable, but this is not necessarily true. But there are great products that don’t sell for a myriad of reasons, and I learned it the most painful way. You can't explain a good business idea on a phrase: you need at least 2 to 3 minutes talking to give a high level view of how it works. To show someone you have a great business idea, you need to show how you’ll get money and how'll spend less than what you got, and for this, one of the best ways is your business plan.

Here's a tip... From Geoffrey Moore's "Crossing the Chasm" Can you communicate what your organisation does, with the minimum words but maximum impact? Try the elevator test. Who is the product aimed at? [Customer segment] What problem does it solve? [Problem] What category of product is it? [Category] What is the key differentiator? [Differentiator] What/who is the competition? [Competition] Then your 15 seconds of opportunity are crystalised by: “For [customer segment] who have [the problem] our product is a [category] that [differentiator]. Unlike [competition] our product [differentiator].” --Colin Mackay--

Geoffrey Moore's own "elevator test" Who is the product aimed at? clueless .com owners What problem does it solve? none What category of product is it? books and conferences What is the key differentiator? make lots of money What/who is the competition? lots of other authors Let's try it: "For clueless .com owners who have lots of problems our product are books and conferences that make lot of money. Unlike lots of other authors our product make lot of money". Hmmm... Except for the last phrase, seems good.

Thanks for the replies. Is evalator test a real concept in business world? Hmm.. i think games is hard... and everyone in the previous competition go towards wireless apps... is wireless really the future? And any idea of a good business proposal format? If not mistake business proposal is different with business plan. The evalator tips can use directly into business proposal? I was suppose to write less than 1000 words on that. Thanks a lot.
