Doesn't matter if you shop there or not, you're affected by it. As you are probaby NOT aware, the prevelance of barcodes on EVERYTHING is because WalMart decreed that all their suppliers must have it. And as mentiond, RFID is also because WalMart wants it - if anyone else wanted it, nobody would care. Now, while most of the stuff linked to at MetaFilter in regards to socity issues are pretty bombastic, the underlying concept behind the stuff is what's important - as you see about barcodes. Generally, I don't bother going to the main link half of the time, I just read the comments one it hits more than 20, because people link to OTHER stuff the intersects with the topic. Your comment about "oh, it doesn't affect me", is pretty much summed by in the middle: I don't know about this. Did you grow up in a middle-American suburb? I did, and there used to be lot more variety before we woke up one day and found a Walmart at the south end of town. There used to be a little stores that would make ends meet by selling one product, but they'd carry a lot of other little things you couldn't get anywhere else, that you'd only buy occasionally. Walmart has kind of pushed those stores out of business. Now everybody drives to Walmart on their way home from work. -- by Hildago. But MetaFilter, like Fark, has a LOT of random crap - Lego, boobies, sports, weird things like the ball of twine artshow... don't judge it by one peice YOU don't like. You're free to voice your thoughts there, too.

Huh? What's to lust over? There is no programming at all - it's the same existing database that barcodes use, just different hardware. You plug in a new reader, and you're done. End of story. The only ones going to get rich from this are the hardware players, not people like you or I. Unless you're managing the hardware, of course. The problem with RFID (now called "green tags" to make them more "friendly") is that the abuse of them will be huge. We're already seeing abuse with the store discount cards in terms.

Actually I wasn't making so much of a disparaging comment about MetaFilter as I was rolling my eyes (and deservedly so) regarding Conspiracy Theory stuff. The problem with Walmart (as with all things like Walmart, and democracy, and pretty much everything else is) if you don't like it, don't shop there. Just as you say: Todd C. Wilson wrote: don't judge it by one peice YOU don't like. You're free to voice your thoughts there, too. It's 'bout choices. Walmart is big for one reason and one reason only. To use the street vernacular: "Folks be shopping there". If folks don't be shopping there, walmart won't be big. In summation, I have just spent more time on the subject of Walmart in the last 48 seconds than I have spent time in the store over the last 48 months. Paul

I'm naturally inclined to love hardware -it gets in the blood. Programming is only interesting when it makes hardware do something new.:-O But having spent a lot of years being in charge, among other things, of inventory control for a hardware store chain that leaked inventory badly, I welcome the idea. Do you have any idea how frustrating it is to spend all night counting and sorting 30,000 PVC plumbing fittings into their proper bins only to arrive the next day to find that most have them have migrated to other bins?
