iTunes for Windows is out

can't install it at work !!! will have to wait ... can you tell me if it eats a lot of CPU?

not too bad, but it does take quite a bit of memory. I have a pentium III (997 mhz) and ~256 Mb of RAM and it worked OK with a number of other apps open (Visual C++). ¡El diablo está en mis pantalones! ¡Mire, mire! Wooooooooooohooooooooooooooo! Thanks Jim, been waiting for this baby to roll out. Might take me awhile to download, ah well. Legal music here I come. p.s. if apple goes down to a DDOS... it was me being peeved that iTunes (specifically with the music store) for Windows did not live up to expectations. regards, Paul Watson Bluegrass South Africa Miszou wrote: I have read the entire internet. on how boring his day was. Totally bummed out man. Like, schwaaa. The Apple Music Store is only for Americans or kids with credit cards with a billing address in the States. I live in South Africa. It is not mentioned anywhere until you have downloaded the app, installed it and hit the Music Store link. Then it politely informs you the service is not available for buying tracks in "your area". I can browse the store and even listen to the previews, just can't register a credit card and buy. I must say though the store is very, very slick. The preview option works far better than any other I have tried e.g. Amazon. It is super fast, quite amazing really. I like the interface. Will give the media player a bash but doubt I will use it much as most of my ripped CDs are in WMA format. I guess the record companies are restricting Apple on this score, but still, a warning before download 19megs (30 minutes for me) would be nice. I am definitley sending Apple an email asking for worldwide service (if enough non-Americans do then Apple and the record companies might be influenced to open up). So much for a borderless internet. Damn, damn, damn. p.s. Anyone got a fake billing address I can use? ;) regards, Paul Watson Bluegrass South Africa Miszou wrote: I have read the entire internet. on how boring his day was. I just downloaded it! Looks just like the mac version, except for the dialogs and menu bar. Well at least the UI is less annoying than the Quicktime player. While I like iTunes on the Mac, I really wish they had simply gone with a standard window UI. That said it is well laid out. I'd be curious to know what others think http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/[^] ¡El diablo está en mis pantalones! ¡Mire, mire! Well, just downloaded and installed the software, and pointed it to the root of my 5996 track MP3/OGG collection. Waiting to see what it does with it... :~
Update: First Impressions
- Does not support OGG-Vorbis files. - Blocks while importing music, and took quite a while to churn through the 5442 tracks on my portable HD. + Quite fast once started. + The interface is clean and consistent. + Interface resembles the better parts of WinAmp3 and WMP9. - Nothing fancy about the feature set - nothing obvious lacking, but while WinAmp is building in it's own query language, this sticks with a plain-jane text search. + Search is very fast. + ID3 editor is clean and powerful. - Visualization is nothing special, and refused to unlock my screen after being run full-screen. + Sound quality is excellent. A generic-looking equalizer is thrown in too, but is as bland as it looks. - Seems to think the Maximize button is for switching to a mini-player. - Seems to think double-clicking on the title-bar should toggle between two large, but not full-screen sizes. Next: ITunes Music Store...

Wee-haa. Been waiting ages for this. Let's hope it's ok. It appears I can't buy anything from their store but I'm not too worried about that. I'm more interested in seeing how it plays with my iPod. I used to use XPlay from mediafour.com[^] which was quite good, but have been trying Anapod (http://www.redchairsoftware.com/anapod/[^]) which given their notmad software should have been really good. Unfortunately so far it's been really buggy. Bit of a waste of $15 dollars. I'll give them a chance though, and see if they come good. I'm heading out to the PDC at the end of the month and planning on upgrading from my 10Gb mark-II iPod to a new 40Gb mark-III. heh, I will get a visit from the RIAA for sure if I do that. The rule is apparently the service is not to be used from outside of the States. *paul downloads rebel without a cause, puts on a red bandana, finds some pink paper* regards, Paul Watson Bluegrass South Africa Miszou wrote: I have read the entire internet. on how boring his day was. You think it is going to be any good? The rumblings I have heard is that it is only Napster in name and all RIAA/record-companies in spirit. I hope not, would be nice to have it as a really good service. * Great sig regards, Paul Watson Bluegrass South Africa Miszou wrote: I have read the entire internet. on how boring his day was. Sob. No ITunes for the UK yet ... hopefully Apple are working on it. However, can someone explain something to me. Why do I need special software? If I wanted to buy a couple of tracks, do they come in some proprietary iTunes file format or something? All I want is the ability to buy album tracks in a format of my choice - e.g. MP3 or WMA. I would also be willing to pay more for a higher quality bit rate. Is this possible with iTunes?

proprietary iTunes file format or something? Nope, they use AAC[^] Why do I need special software? I've never understood this either. Maybe to ensure the DRM rule are followed? Maybe if they opened it up to anyone then they would have now way to prove to the record companies that people weren't ripping them off (i.e. the old Napster). ¡El diablo está en mis pantalones! ¡Mire, mire!
