Is there a trick to this? Am I missing something very simple? I've had a website for over 3 years, and it cannot be found in ANY search engines. Anyone have any tips to fix this problem? ~Mike Stanbrook
Strange...mine is up for the same time, and come on the first page of google, yahoo, altavista or hotbot. I just put the "meta name content" tag in main htm page, and perhaps 20 links directed to others sites through the different pages.

Have your meta words in H1 and H2 tags might help Also get Links to a sopecific page on your site, rather than just the .com . Make sure you yourseld use the google toolbar with the page rank info working. Make sure your site is in the meta words eg http://www.cvtgroup.com/. Doing all this should get you to the top in 5 minutes. Regardz Colin J Davies

Yahoo, AltaVista, WebCrawler, Lycos... Any that I could think of. Are there specific requirements for the site to be captured by their bots? Certain META tags required? Page extensions (/htm, .html, .asp, .aspx, etc)? ~Mike Stanbrook
USE THE META KEYWORDS TAGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If you don't you'll be placed under Information Unavailible section of the bookmarks in my browser. Keywords/Meta tags - Don't have more than 2 or 3 Meta keywords. Search engines rank your pages by weight. When a searcher enters some words and hits "search", the search engine pulls up the sites that most closely match the search criteria by weight. Examples: Site 1 has this KEYWORD meta-tag: Sports,Gambling,Baseball Site 2 has this KEYWORD meta-tag: Baseball, Basketball, Hockey Site 3 has this KEYWORD meta-tag: Baseball Now, if a user entered the word "Baseball" for their search, Site 3 would come up before the other 2 because Site 3 would be 100% and carry more weight. So you see that having a million different meta-keywords actually hurts your placement (unless the searcher enters several of your keywords as their search criteria). In addition, the body text of your homepage should carry the meta-tag keyword 4 or 5 times. That will add to the search engine weighting. So your homepage should carry some text like: "Do you like BASEBALL? Well you have come to the BASEBALL site that has all the BASEBALL information that any true BASEBALL fan wants!" Another factor that adds weight to your site is the number of external links. How many sites link to your site? The more sites that link to your site - the more weight your site gets. Do you really want traffic to come to your site? Then create a link-exchange page and contact other site owners and arrange link exchanges. This is how the adult industry does it, and it works exactly the same way for non-adult sites.

Get a blog on your site and update often. I no longer have to even try with search engines, my site ranks in first page on a wide range of topics I am no expert in but mentioned maybe once or twice at most. I did not even submit my site (why would I submit a personal journal anyway? Must have crawled through a link). Honestly, search engines are biased towards fresh content with well structured HTML. The CONTENT Meta Tag has been so abused that most search engines no longer use them in a meaningful way. Put your title in a H1, use your search words in the content of your pages often and update often. Get others to link to you as well, that helps a lot. No offense to the others that replied, but my advice is to pay nearly no attention to anything anyone has written here. We have a top ranked site and it's not that hard, there are no tricks, just doing things properly. Here is a good site that contains (in various areas) every possible thing you need to know to get a good search engine listing and for web marketing in general: www.bruceclay.com[^] Be very wary of asking people for advice on this unless they absolutely know what they are doing. Some of the old tactics that were popular just a year or two ago will get your site completely banned from some search engines.

Me too. I've had messages from people searching for stuff I've only mentioned a couple of times in my journal, and that's exactly where they've ended up. A while ago I discovered that typing "Anna Metcalfe" into Google and hitting the "I'm Feeling Lucky" button takes you straight to my site. No one was more surprised than me! If I remember correctly I did submit it to Google when I started it last year though - and all pages include meta tags set to something appropriate.
