Same old, same old. Can't you guys find something new other than "Look what Apple is doing". How do you propose any field moves forward without building on what's available? Any suggestion to the contrary is ludicrous. Especially considering that Linux - right down to the base idea - was plagiarised. The .NET vision has been around for a long time now, and even Sun - sorry $un - share the same vision. Linux people WON'T use .NET That's a bit hypocritical seeing as a bunch of Linux people are currently developing a Linux version of the .NET CLR. Or aren't they true penguins? The perpose of Linux is to kill MS. We'll just use something else. Well they're not doing a very good job. As I understand it they are oinly just getting to the same level UNIX was at fifteen years ago. Still, what can you epxect from a group of non-collaborating people who are so preocupied with spreading their newfound inner peace to the rest of the world than they are to actually get off their arses and make something of it. There are a few exceptions, but not many. Home users (inc. students) particularly like Linux because they can burn a copy of a friend's copied CD without breaking the law. We've all heard that 100 monkeys typing in Visual C++ could come up with Windows. - thanks to MS, we now know this is true Cool, I never knew that fact. Maybe you could put me in touch with some people who have written an operating system on the same level as Windows XP. Arrrr come on, can't you do better than that? A personal insult just isn't personal without at least two references to my obviously small cock and sexual orientation involving penquins. If you want to insult someone, at least have the decency to do it properly. If you are short on insulting phrases, just post a message to the effect of "I love Microsoft products" www.slashdot.org and look at the top few replies (probably within a minute of posting as they seem to have nothing better to do).

Not that I'm denying that MS has done things with OEMs that at best border on illegal and are obviously unethical, but your response here shows that you really don't have the facts. You claimed actual illegal practices. When asked for evidence to support it you tell a story in which MS took legal action to prevent a company from installing a competitors OS alongside their own. If they took *legal* action this indicates that either MS was fully within their legal rights and that the OEM wasn't, or that a ruling on it was enough in the grey area that the OEM simply didn't fight MS on it. In either case this is evidence that they weren't firmly in an area that can be described as illegal practice. This is my main problem with most MS rants/raves/bashes. They are based solely on repetition of mantras published by MS's competitors so that there's no evidence of fact. MS does use a lot of muscle to retain and even gain market share, and IMO this often results in unethical and possibly illegal actions, but so does every other company in a competitive market. Until actual proof of illegal actions appear before a court the MS bashers are nothing but an annoyance. William E. Kempf

The case in question is not finalized yet. Actual proof of illegal practices has not been shown. Even if the case were finalized the actual findings in this case are unrelated to the questions you were asking. Ah, you do know parts of the case. :) But one of major points of the case was the bundling of IE. Was IE part of the OS or not? That is an EXTREMELY important part of the case. If IE is not part of the OS (which the DOJ has given up on trying to prove which makes most of the case worthless), then Microsoft violated the Sherman Anti-Trust laws by tying one product with another. Microsoft can not enter in agreements forcing people to install products such as Office with Windows. That is a clear violation. (Look up the Kodak case on www.antitrustcases.com). But, like I mentioned, the DOJ isn't even going to try to show that IE isn't part of the OS now. So the big questions is "Where is the beef". I would love to see specifics on the other stuff. Looking at other exclusive cases such as "UNITED STATES v. GRIFFITH ET AL" and "STANDARD OIL CO. V. UNITED STATES", I don't see much connection. No major company has yet shown the resolve to take on Microsoft by developing products with a coherent plan, that enables users to move from Microsoft. What does a customer look for? Getting things done at an acceptable price in the least possible time. Obviously Microsoft products fit the bill now. How many operating systems are as easy to use and maintain as Windows? probably Apple Macs. How many OSs allow rapid application development in the way Visual Studio does? Microsoft made application programming easier than on any other platform. The GUI makes starters feel better and give them a hope that they can do something. The integration of development platforms increases productivity. Hence, the largest number of small shareware apps on Windows. I believe that the OEM agreements and bundling are all minor reasons for Microsoft's rise. Microsoft would have become successful even otherwise. What deals did they do to kill other Office apps like Word Perfect and Corel? The MS Office clearly rose above the rest in usability. The reasons for Microsoft rise in my mind is due to: 1. Propoganda Machine: They have a really good marketing that builds up the hype before the product is released and they do deals before the release to make staggering sales figures on the day of launch. 2. An aesthetic user interface: stability vs ease-of-use - All companies excpet MS placed importance on the first and MS gambled on the second. People appreciated the ease of use and computer illiterates took to it. 3. Wooing developers: MS has the most loyal developer base. I attribute it to the integrated, easy to use development environments. 4. Getting Support staff: A small company can easily get people to support a Microsoft Windows network than a network that contains Unix servers and Microsoft/Apple desktops. When left with a choice of writing server apps for small brokerages, that have not very well trained support staff, I chose Windows over Linux just because the number of people available to support a Linux installation is meagre. 5. Hiding complexity from users: Microsoft hides the complexity of the software they write pretty well. When booting up Windows, you see a beautiful picture. When bootimg up linux, you see a lot of text messages. You can argue that this is not important. But, users who do nor understand what these messages are, they respond with a "WOW, that looks complex". What will I do, if something goes wrong? Linux people WON'T use .NET. Thats what I meant. Can't agree with that. If .NET works well, is an open standard and is the right tool for a market then the Linux community will embrace it totally. However that's a lot of .IF They don't want MS's junk. Agreed, but fortunately not all of MS's products are junk. While I hate windows with a passion, I love NT and I really like Linux. I think that most people who hate MS do so due to excess exposure to Win95,98,etc and reading about thier marketing/business ethics. The perpose of Linux is to kill MS. We'll just use something else. I think the purpose of Linux is to provide an open source OS, written by the people, for the people. In this respect Linux is an incredible offering that benefits us all. But wait; actual proof of illegal activity WAS presented before the court, and was UPHELD in the appeals court. The >only< part that has been thrown out was the remedy, and that >only< because the judge got cocky. Please don't ask me to list the illegal doings. My feelings against MS are a result of the slimy and sleazy tactics they're used in the past few years (forcing IE down everyone's throats by tying it to bug fixes in the tree control!), rarely fixing bugs in their code before bringing out the next generation of technologiies (with new bugs and a new steep learning curve), etc. ALl of this gave me a REAL BAD FEELING about the company; the courts vindicated this last year.

The case in question may not yet be finalized, but it's damn close. And so far, there has been no vindication of MS whatsoever.. except that the judge acted improperly outside the courtroom. You should not let the fact that your opoonent is a Linux bigot cloud your judgement. Those of us who depend on Windows for a living are certainly victims of MS's hubris as much as anyone else.

You know, I would have no trouble with regulations limiting what MS can do *ONLY* if there was some kind of guarantee that as soon as those regulations begin to hamper them against their competitors (ie, their competitors become too competitive) they should be removed. The problem is that such regulations take an act of god to get removed, and by the time they do, the regulated company is all but out of business. IBM was nearly put out of business by such regulations in the 80's. Since I have no faith in our government to police its regulations and re-evaluate them objectively, I don't believe it's viable to regulate a company like MS or IBM or Intel. -- Where are we going? Actually, they've been convicted of Jaywalking. The Murder charge was thrown out, and the Agravated assault charge was sent back to court for retrying if the plaintif so desired. The plaintiff (the DOJ and states) has said they don't want to pursue it. Now, what MS has been convicted of is not much. A few counts of restrictive licensing and agreements. That's it. That's not to say those aren't bad, but the vast majority of the case was either thrown out, or considered by the DOJ to be not worth retrying. -- Where are we going? And why am I in this handbasket?
