Try spending $30: $10 at MetaFilter.com $10 at Kuro5hin.org $10 at Fark.com These are for smaller text ads, running for 10,000 serves, similar to what Google does - but Google costs more, but might be worth it. Clickthroughs vary widely on those three, from a lousy 0.57% (that only ran for about 10 days) to a decent 4.94% that has only served about 2,500 ads. I think the #2 item is probably the most important, and you should probably search for the competors product (have they been out longer than yours?) and see where they are listed, and get listed there too. And as always, it's not good enough to just be available, you need to be better, faster, stronger than the other products - gotta have some good reason for people to WANT to use your product, other than "try it, you'll like it". It's a bitch writing up good adverts/listing comments...

OK that's cool advice indeed. Thanks. :) 2.0, hmmm. Do you think we should bring out 2.0 instead of 1.1? Regards, Rohit Sinha Meet Browsy

That shouldn't be a problem since upgrades are free for one year. So OK, 2.0 it'll be. Regards, Rohit Sinha Meet Browsy

Well, I need a bit of advice from you guys. This is the first time I'm doing something like this and it has me stumped. I have my own firm which I run with a friend and partner. We launched our first shareware app a few days back. Basically it's a popup blocker, banner ad blocker, blah blah. It well, got a few awards here and there too. So far, so good. Yes, the software has a couple smallish bugs, but 1.1 is on the way. The problem is that we are not seeing much in the way of traffic and downloads. People just don't know about us. Note that I'm not talking about sales. People will buy only if they like the thing and find it useful. Other similar products have got a much higher download count in fewer days than us. For example, while we are still struggling at 430 (yesterday's count), another similar one, released the next day, has got 11k+. :( And people are looking for this type of software too, as is evident from the download counts of other similar programs. So it's not like we made something nobody wants. Anyway, my question is, what do you guys do? I'm sure there are many of you here who make shareware type apps too, or something that you market on a regular basis. How do you market your products? These are the things I can think of: 1. Get listed on download.com. Done. Plus a lot more shareware sites. 2. Try to improve search engine ranking. Working on it. 3. Try to make affiliates who will sell your app and earn commission. We tried this but so far have managed to get only two affiliates and no results - neither in the form of downloads, nor sales - from them. 4. Money is scarce, so we don't have any advertising budget at all. Besides, I don't really think advertising on the web really works (plus, it would be against what our software is about :) ). And we don't want to bring in any investors either. Not that we are sure an investor would be interested either. So whatever. We need to bring people to our website and make them download and try out our software. If no one tries it out, no one is going to buy it, right? So how do we do it? What do you advise? I can't just sit here twiddling my thumbs and biting my nails while days pass by, can I? :( Regards, Rohit Sinha Meet Browsy

Two suggestions, 1. Send out review copies to both print and online magazines 2. Ring up some magazines and ask how you can get your software on a magazine coverdisk. The others have given good advice and I cannot add much except this; I think the name of the product is, well, not good. I don't want to hurt your feelings but Browsy to me sounds childish, like a product targeted at kids or stay at home moms who need some company. Even the tagline, Meet Browsy, reinforces that. Meet Barney the friendly dinosaur. Meet Browsy the friendly browser. It reminds me of Clippy. This is a purely personal opinion and others may think it is a great name. I have to agree with Paul. I have never produced shareware software, but as a downloader "Browsy" and the cute little dog picture do not peak my interest. The first two things I look for when downloading are features and screen shots. Your features look good, but your screen shots are too childish (I mean this to be constructive not personal). One other thing you may have noticed with other similar software are names with stopper, killer, smasher... Browsy it too positive for a popup blocker. Good Luck! Jerry

Finally. :) OK, you are right, this might be the reason. Or at least one of the reasons. While I can't change the name and logo now, I can sure change the tagline. About the name and logo, yes it's a bit childish and all that, but I asked around before settling on these. People chose these for me. Apparently people do like things like Clippy and Browsy. It looks like we programmer types are the only tough lot. ;P Thanks for the comments Paul, I was looking for what we were doing wrong than what we were missing. :) Nothing to be offended about.
