Pentium M

Okay, so I'm looking at new laptops and they basically fall into four categories: AMD, Celeron, Pentium 4 and Pentium M. I know the comparisons between the first three. I don't particularly want my lap set on fire, so AMD is looking unlikely; I'm just not interested in another Celeron. So I'm thinking Pentium 4 or M but I don't really know what a Pentium M is, except to say that it's specifically designed for Mobile PCs and it's low on power consumption (I think). Most of the Pentium 4s around at the moment seem to be around 2+ GHz while Pentium Ms seem to be more in the 1.3GHz arena. So my question really is this: Is a Pentium M 1.3GHz equivalent, better or worse than a Pentium 4 1.3GHz would be? And if not equivalent, roughly what is the equivalent? Paul

Interestingly enough Intel is saying that mhz does matter (hmm, I remember them saying otherwise :suss: ) because from what I can tell the P-M 1.3 is supposedly equivelant performance wise, if not faster, than the P4m 2.0 I've seen and operated both, I would look at features available rather and pick one for other features that fit your preference (between the P4 and PM) Matt Newman

I wonder if they will start advertizing that MHz does not matter and have an add campaign for this. AMD has been saying this for years now and could use some adds... John

I don't really need anything with that much power anyway so you're right, it's not going to be a major issue. Generally, my wife uses the laptop when I'm on the desktop (which is, of course, most of the time) and she won't use it for more than internet browsing and playing Sim games. I'll probably only use it when I'm away from home, and then only for email and light development. Considering pretty much everything on the market covers these requirements, I'll probably end up going for the sleekest or the lightest, or the one with the least crappy "free" software :rolleyes: Paul

One thing your going to want to do is get a book or something that has the same surface area as the bottom of the laptop because it will get hot. Matt Newman

Oh well, I'm a developer, There's no lack of huge books around our house. :-D But it occurs to me that better cooling systems would be a good selling point for one laptop over another, and yet I don't see any comparisons between brands on this anywhere. The problem is theres no where for the heat to go, everything is too close to really do any exotic cooling. Matt Newman

I'm much happier working with a desktop upgrade, I can do what I like there. I've been putting off a laptop upgrade for a while now but a Celeron 600 with 8Mb RAM really doesn't do it for me any more and it being WinME doesn't make me any happier. Got to bite the bullet. Paul
