I'm going to a fancy-dress halloween party this weekend, and I'm completely stumped for ideas for a costume. Any suggestions? The missus suggested "Darth Maul" but that doesn't sound very Halloweeny to me :-)

It got some fun looks because it was really scary :sigh: However, I will admit that it was an original idea and it wasn't *that* bad of a costume. :)

Its only some couple of years that halloween is "celebrated" in switzerland and warehouses are making a big business out of it. But if you really go back to the roots of the custom and understand what a cruel and bloody background it has, you wouldn't find it that funny anymore. How can you ignore that in the middle age lots of kids were sacrificed in this custom to some i-dont-know-what celtic gods and that this was a time full of death and fear? And today people disguise and make their stupid parties ??? :wtf::wtf::wtf:

Well if you live in the United States you could go to Wal Mart and buy the t-shirt that says this is my halloween costume. If not you could make one that says that. My boyfriend wanted to do that, but I wouldn't let him....haha.

Dude...that was SO 1300. I mean really now, if you REALLY want to look back THAT far as to why we shouldn't celebrate anything, why celebrate independence days for countries. Why not be upset at the Prussians for invading Saxony? I mean really, if you're going to get upset and everything for something that happened over 700 years ago, you really have too much to complain about. <---signature---> Your kid gets into Duke. Ah, but you see the burning people at the stakes is just rumored to be a myth. Here's some history on Halloween: The word Halloween actually comes from the Catholic Church and their tradition of "All Hallows Eve" (or "All Saints Day") which was celebrated on November 1st. Now the celtic New Year fell on October 31st because they believed that summer ended on this day. One story says that, on that day, the disembodied spirits of all those who had died throughout the preceding year would come back in search of living bodies to possess for the next year.the still-living did not want to be possessed. So on the night of October 31, villagers would extinguish the fires in their homes, to make them cold and undesirable. They would then dress up in all manner of ghoulish costumes and noisily paraded around the neighborhood, being as destructive as possible in order to frighten away spirits looking for bodies to possess. Some accounts tell of how the Celts would burn someone at the stake who was thought to have already been possessed, as sort of a lesson to the spirits. But this was proven a myth with other things that happened in Celtic history. The custom of trick-or-treating is thought to have originated not with the Irish Celts, but with a ninth-century European custom called souling. On November 2, All Souls Day, early Christians would walk from village to village begging for "soul cakes," made out of square pieces of bread with currants. The more soul cakes the beggars would receive, the more prayers they would promise to say on behalf of the dead relatives of the donors. At the time, it was believed that the dead remained in limbo for a time after death, and that prayer, even by strangers, could expedite a soul's passage to heaven. So, although some cults may have adopted Halloween as their favorite "holiday," the day itself did not grow out of evil practices.
