My friend who lives in New York city told me a long time ago (early 90s) that it was popular for a while for people to hang these little signs on the rearview mirror that said "Don't break in, I have no car stereo". The legend around New York was that someone with one of these signs came back to their car and found the window smashed and someone had written on the sign: "Get one!"

Knew a guy who hooked up a magnatron from a microwave oven under his seat which was connected to the car battery- and only deactivated by a kill switch under the dash. ONe morning his car stereo was gone and his car battery was dead. Could be a dirty car stereo stealin' theif on kidney dialisys, 1/2 a dead liver and no way to have children... who knows. Paul

Could you please add to your shooting target list the drunk bastard that crashed into my car two days ago and went away? A friend and I used to think if we could somehow hook up an electrical generator to your car somehow and charge up your car. Whoever touches the car then would be in for a shocking surprise. ;) And yes, my friend's car had been broken into before. Hope you catch the finks.

I grew up with dogs, so I've got a kinda strong attachments to canines. Dogs that live in the car, and not with you in the house in a weird concept for me. For me, dogs are more of a companion than anything else.

Hmm, you have brought up an oddity in the English language Karl. When I read your post I thought "doh, I mispelt flak" because yes, I meant metaphorically like anti aircraft gun FLAK. Then I looked flack up in the dictionary to make sure and flack is a word, just not what I thought. Though the definition of flack is related in a way. So yes, I meant FLAK and not a slick spokesperson. regards, Paul Watson Bluegrass South Africa Anna-Jayne Metcalfe wrote: "Cynicism has it's place in life - but it should be kept well away from your inner self." Thanks. That's what I wanted to know, if this expression was related to FLAK, a "souvenir" of WW2 becoming an expression. Very interesting, indeed, it shows in a way how air battles were dominant for anglo-saxon countries during WW2.

I have always used it and I think most South Africans do, or at least understand it. I am not sure about other english speakers. It is similar to the expression taking heat that Americans use. Actually I think taking heat is more in use by kids my age than taking flak thanks to the insidious invasion of American culture :-D As for your BOB theory, you are the expert but could be right. regards, Paul Watson Bluegrass South Africa Anna-Jayne Metcalfe wrote: "Cynicism has it's place in life - but it should be kept well away from your inner self." I actually think it can be spelt either way (maybe English and American spelling). If you use it like Paul did it means excessive criticism. :)
