Roger J wrote: dont they do that kind of games anymore? Nah :( I haven't seen any of these type of games in a while. Games nowadays are all fast paced high graphics things. Speaking of games I also kinda miss the quest games. There's nothing like that anymore either. :(

In the UK there is a chain of shops called "Games Workshop" that do board based games, I don't know about PC based turns games though. Elaine :rose: The tigress is here :-D

I've thinking the same recently, remembering all those cool wargames that I used to play on the Spectrum (Battle Of Britain, Tobruk etc). I've played the demo of UFO: Aftermath[^] and it looks good but may not be what you are looking for. Some interesting stuff (if sometimes unfinished) can be found at GameDev.net showcase[^] - you'll have to scroll down a bit - the games are listed on the right. Whilst you might not find what you are looking for there, there are plenty of links to follow on the site for various freeware/shareware games. Download.com used to be pretty good for finding obscure little shareware strategy games but now it all seems to be demos of full products. Come on, start VC++ and let's code it! :) Oh, I see - you want to stop coding for a few days! Trying to make bits uncopyable is like trying to make water not wet. -- Bruce Schneier By the way, dog_spawn isn't a nickname - it is my name with an underscore instead of a space. -- dog_spawn

If you're feeling nostalgic you can find plenty of old strategy games at Home of the Underdogs[^].

BTW, you should try playing Kings Of Chaos, it's the nearest thing I can think of, although it's technically a MMORPG. Awhile back I was playing hex-based WW1 dogfighting games at http://www.youplay.it[^] - called Blue Max, pretty neat implementation of the hex based games. It's blocked from my work so I can't confirm it's still up & running (let me know, eh?). Somebody mentioned Tobruk - loved it! still have it on my shelf. Wanna get a few players and up a play by email game? Nevermind - It's been too long anyway - it would take me a month just to read the directions again!

Disciples II[^] is an excellent remake of the original; plus there is now an expansion pack for the game. The story line is good (better than most), really nice graphics, great sound track and overall, it's fun. D.

Howzabout MOO2 and MOO3? I still think MOO2 is a great game for multiplayer or single-player use, but its networking ability is a little, um, limited. I bought M003 and it's pretty cool, but I never found anyone to play it with me. Regards Jeff Varszegi

I've become quite addicted to Mah Jong on Yahoo of late - definitely turn-based, whether played solitaire or against others online. "Your village called -

I picked up Superpower in the discount bin for $10. It is turn-based with configuration for "win" goals. Develop technologies, build armies, use diplomacy, if all else fails, nuke the bastards. I like taking little countries and trying to take over big ones with super-soldiers. I try to think but nothing happens.

But the problem is that as the game progressed, it got slower and slower. The more units available, the longer each turn takes. So you end up waiting for your opponent(s) to make their moves and you lose track of your objectives. Real-time strategy games keep you engaged the whole time. But their biggest disadvantage is that speed is of the essense. If your opponent is more agile at building up his army, he'll have an advantage. So you have to learn to quickly get ready for battle. The adrenaline makes it all worth it, though. It's rarely boring. The one I play online is Age of Empires II The Conquerors. It rocks! Regards, Alvaro
