I'll take your database reports and raise you managing online surveys for market research.:(( My current list of projects (one is clearly not enough) includes: 1) An online, web-enabled, full featured cross tab engine. Due sometime in December (nebulus isn't it?) About 25% complete. 2) An in-memory database with automaticly produced, query-based indexes. Part of #1, but designed and implemented as an independent tool. 3) A panelest management system for handling large lists of survey panelists. Due anytime between last month and yesterday. A combination of web and GUI interfaces. 4) An bulk email system for managing frequent email jobs/batches. Part of #3, but designed and implemented as an independent tool. A combination of web and GUI interfaces. 5) Internet survey system. Maintenance mode now, thankfully. 6) Online project management system for online surveys., Maintenance mode now, but lots of changes on the way. etc. Does any of this sound appealing. (Oh, I forgot to mention documentation of all of above.) This is really just a personal rant because I am bored out of my gord with my current workload.

Well, I'm happy to say that I could hardly imagine a better job than I'm doing today. I work with very smart people (not the least of which is Chris along with a heady list of others), we're doing work that I consider important, and everyone seems positive and motiviated (unless you talk about coffee, and then the conversation gets very adverse ;)) David

Why're you married and have kids? Without these, you don't need to pay mortgage, you don't need to save up for their tuition... Software developers are not paid to do any of these things. They're reserved for MBA and lawyers.
In all reality, the pay at my current job is pretty good. I'd have a hard time finding a better paying job without moving and then there's the issue of cost-of-living. Thanks for the link. Actually, I'm already using it. It works farily well. The biggest issue I have is the way indexes are handled. It's not really a problem with the engine, its just that the I need to use it with an ad-hoc cross tab engine. The tables average over 200 columns each (numerics + dates, and a few text fields) and can be queried in almost any way imaginable. There is no way to design indexes for them in any standard kinda-way. So, I am building specialized code to build pseudo-indexes based on the filters (where clauses) users use and to optimize the system that way. Not exacly exciting, but its a living.

I think most jobs have "boring" aspect to them. After being laid off for 6 months I landed a job doing electronic tech work. Mostly consisting of cleaning up the previous occupants mess. Mostly why they was the privious occupant. Now, I have moved out of that and am solely responsible for the next generation of the company software. Since the company's market place is not something I am intimately familiar with, I do a lot of research mixed with furious coding. Geneally more research than coding. Sometimes it gets boring but then I have the option of doing something else for a bit to recharge my batteries. Of course I do have the "joy" of the daily status reports to the company president.... :laugh: Artificial intelligence is no match for natural stupidity.

Only recently have I been doing work that I don't find entirely boring. Unfortunately I need more hours as well. :-( But quite likely what I find interesting you might find darn boring. Regardz Colin J Davies

I actually enjoy my job but that is most likely due to the fact I do not work for a software development company. I develop solutions for my company to use internally so it isn't day in day out the same thing. Some days it is integration applications, next day it is network management applications. All in all I am pretty happy.

We paid off the house, never had a car payment, no kids. It was all boring, boring, boring and I got sick of working for idiots. That's why I retired at a little over 50. :laugh: At any given instant there are considerably more assholes than mouths in the universe.

I got hired to worked on search engine technology. Instead, I've been doing database reports (in Java) X|. I've been here two months and I still don't have a PC, a desk nor reliable email. You tell me :mad: It's a good thing the money's OK :rolleyes:

Frustrated, but not bored. I dislike the language, but code is code is code. The logic for assembly is just at a lower level, but essentially the same stuff. There is crap for documentation of a huge application that's grown over the past 20+ yrs. Zero standards, and diddley-squat direction. So there's too much scrambling around to be bored, but I am frustrated. My task is to help improve the flow of information as much as I can, while getting my regular job done. :sigh:
