Yet Another Software Recommendation Thread Looking for some help finding replacements for some software I have been using for a while. Looking to change as 2 products have moved from freeware to shareware and the other I just don't like. Hoping to stay freeware as my non-technical job barely pays enough to support a family without buying extras like software. OK, so I mean the wife won't let me spend the money. LeechGet[^] - Download manager, does everything I want but is now Shareware. What do others use? SmartFTP[^] - FTP client, like LeechGet does what I want, but no longer free. Alternatives? Winamp[^] - Too bloated, I just wabt something lightweight that plays MP3's and CD's. I have been looking at another piece of software that I am thinking of paying for. BurnInTest 3.2[^], it is currently on special for $39.90. If I'm lucky I will pick up enough money from the family this weekend to cover the purchase. For the past few weeks my computer has been suffering from sporadic freezes and the occasional IDE timeout when starting Windows. I would like to find out if the HDD is shitting itself or if it is actually the motherboard. As I don't have access to another HDD or MB for testing and buying a new one of each to test is out of the question I thought software would be the way to go. Before you all say that spending that sort of money is a waste and would go close to buying a motherboard the software would get further use. My connection back into the technical world is fixing network and hardware problems in small and medium sized businesses when they have problems and call. As a few of the problems have been hardware BurnInTest could be helpful highlighting problems. Anyone have any bad things to say about BurnInTest or recommend anything else in it's place? I'll second the reccomendation of WS_FTP. They make a shareware version, but the Light Edition (freeware) does everything I need. Get it at http://www.ipswitch.com/downloads/index.html. Re the hardware problem - do you perchance have an ASUS motherboard?

I fixed the link. The text had wrapped in the text box while entering it, and apparently the carriage return broke the link. :rolleyes: Re the hardware - I imagine you've moved stuff around (tried the other IDE controller if available, swapped memory modules if there's more than one, etc) in an attempt to isolate the problem?

Unfortunately the free version of LeechFTP is a very old version and is no longer supported (last release date: April 16, 1999). It contains a lot of bugs which makes it sometimes impossible to use. I used to use LeechFTP before, but I had to give it up. :| -- Man definiert also Antiamerikanismus als "Andere Meinung als der Präsident der USA".

Download manager - Flashget (there's a free, adware version) FTP Client - Filezilla rules, it's also Opensource. WinAMP - I use WMP, but I have a powerful machine. About BurnInTest: I ocasonally support family and friend's machines and our office ones, mainly because it's something I like to do (yes, I know, I like to suffer). I tried several burnintest-alikes in the past, and none could pinpoint a single problem than this .vbs file didn't:
while true

for i = 1 to 10
x = x & space(1000)
next i
wendThis will run until you get bored and kill it. You can change to loop limit and it will stress all your available memory and processor. On SMP machines you can start several instances to test the processors. But, thinking twice, US$ 39 is not a big deal, so I would go for it.
