My division changed to Notes this week (because that's what Corporate wanted). Let me just say, Notes is utterly awful. I cannot understand why this pice of shit would even be considered as a competitor to something as simple and elegant (by comparison) as Outlook. The programmers/designers who came up with this should be fired and forbidden to get within 100 yards of a computer, for the rest of their natural lives. OMG..i hate notes. sigh. -c

I was at computer interoperability sessions many years ago. One of the head guys from Lotus Notes was there. They were all talking about all this neat PC crap and how they wished all OS manufactures had a common programming interface. When I asked him about a common document format that I could use on my VAX systems since those fancy document formats didn't do me a damn bit of good, he just gave me a blank stare. I walked out. What morons. Which part of computer interoperability didn't they understand. Tim Smith Descartes Systems Sciences, Inc.

I feel your pain brother. What an awful program! Luckily it's been like a year since I've dealt with it but I remember how nasty it was. What I hated the most was sorting. When I would go to the Sent Items folder it would always sort by... whatever, something I didn't want to sort by. So I would click on the Date column twice to sort descending. If I then went to the Inbox folder and came back to the Sent Items folder, the sort order would be reset! Argh!!! I talked to the Lotus Admin dude and he told me that this was a system-wide setting which he couldn't just change because it would affect everybody. But if he were to ahead with it, he would have to know some special scripting language to use for setting it that way. What a load of crap. It always amazes me how crap like this makes it into large corporations as the "standard". Where I work now, the standard browser is Netscape 4.7! To be allowed to install IE you need a special request where you must explain why you need it. Hang in there, Alvaro

MY ex brother in law is a Notes zealot. We worked in the same building as him at Viewbui;d up until recently and we always teased him about our escape from Bloats. He insists it's not 'just' email software, we insist it's BAD email software, whatever else it may or may not be. Ditto on the reference and the assessment. I've never worked with a piece of crap as bad as Notes. Though I've seen a few other turkeys over people shoulders.. like the mortuary management software I saw at a funeral home a few weeks ago. It had buttons in the tab portions of the Tab controls...

Definitely agree ! We had to use at CSC while I worked there. Are you on a LAN? If so, try having to use it over a 36.6 modem - hoo haw what a way to get email !

Very sad many react before getting to know. You changed to Notes just this week and you started writing crap. Is usefulness of a software in its elegance? There is no way you could write anything useful of a program as huge as Notes on first contact with it, except its interface which may not look like MS products (even so is the fact that you did not spend the whole week on only Notes). Well, we have it here in our company, use it extensively, not a big company but we have never preferred anything better-of course Outlook came with most of our PCs. We even use it to keep the documentations of our codes-just login there and read comments on methods. Well in case you do not know, Notes is not in the same class as Outlook. You would have made more sense if you came out with what is wrong with the Notes, instead of just vetting your on anger over being asked to switch. Best regards, Paul. I'm with you on that one Chris. I used to work for Price Waterhouse and Notes was the corporate standard, the UI was a complete bag of s*hite. The idea of forums was good especially when the most PwC offices were linked to the internet and that was around '93,'94. Lotus seem to take all the windows UI standards then completely ignore them. Not counting the programming "features" like "LotusScript". I've programmed in Notes some years ago (version 4) and almost went nuts! At that time, you couldn't: 1. Create reusable functions: the manual says that you can, only that you should copy & paste 2. The SOURCES are limited to 32kb. So, you start coding. When your code becomes complicated, remove comments (32 kb limit!). When it becomes more complicated, change var names like "docOldVersion" and "docCustomer" to "d1" and "d2". Then, start removing those inutile spaces. 3. Not to mention the "source code editor" 4. Did I mention that in 4.5 version you put javascript code for an HTML field in the "Help String" property ? yes, i know a week is not long enough to give it a real thorough test. but, from what i've seen, its interface is hostile, counter-intuitive, graceless, confusing and just plain ugly. 1. when replying to email - if you want to delete the "history", you can't just select down to the bottom (with the mouse or with the keyboard) because as soon as the very bottom is selected, the whole document becomes selected. there's no way to un-select the bottom. you have to delete small parts of the text, being very careful not to hit the bottom. this is complete crap. 2. there's a button called "Tools" at the top of the frame. but it's actually a menu. then there's a File / Tools submenu. there are different things on each menu. WTF? 3. to make notes not open the browser inside the notes frame, you have to go to the bottom right of the frame, find an unlabed button that actually pops up a menu and choose "Edit current". Edit current what? Why are there menus at the bottom of the frame, hiding in unlabeled buttons? why would i want the browser to open up inside of notes? it's a stupid default. 4. deleting an item from your inbox doesn't get it out of your inbox, it just puts an icon next to it. refreshing your inbox doesn't move the message to the trash, it deletes it entirely. what's the point of having 'trash' folder if it doesn't act like every other 'trash' object on the system? you know, thing in there get a second chance before being deleted. 5. why do i have to 'refresh' the inbox pane to see incoming mail? why can't the stupid thing just show me the new mail?
