. OK, I'm just trying to kick off a long winded contraversial thread. Thats nice of you, in NZ you can get your licence at 15 I find 21 a bit old to start entering bars, But remember the USA managed to have prohibition for about 10yrs Which is an utterly amazing fact I've found Americans to be "sensible drinkers" eg. they don't go out and binge like Kiwi's Aussies and Germans.(and some Poms) I remember as a young bloke have a puke on the hill at the SCG, "Now you wouldn't do that at a Ice Hockey or Baseball game in the states. Also false ID's seem to be big in the USA with many young folk carrying them which just makes a mockery of the law.

What, you expect our laws to actually make sense? ;) Actually, like a lot of things, it varies among states. For driving, in California you can get a learner's permit at 15.5 (which lets you drive as long as a licensed adult is in the car too) and a regular license at 16. I don't know if the drinking age is 21 everywhere; I've always lived in CA so never had occasion to find out. And just so I can relate the two topics, the legal definition of drunk varies among states too. In CA you're legally drunk if you have .08% blood alcohol content. Do you mean for a quick trip over the border for a drink or to stock up on supplies? I remember a colleague was over here from Arizona. He had a story of him and his mates coming back from Mexico stocked up with alcohol. The border patrol made him tip all the alcohol down the drain. If this was the case I would go for the weekend get shitfaced and then come back in time for schol/work. From 21 to 30 I looked radically different. Not a line to be seen at 21, more like a fingerprint by 30. Shit I was getting in to nightclubs at 16. There are maybe 13 people in the World who watch field hockey, or floor hockey for that matter, and a hundred million who watch Hockey I'm afraid that whatever your sensiblities, the battle for the default definition has long been decided. I made it into the Hayloft, a rather run-down country-and-western bar in my childhood hometown at 14. For a while I was pretty impressed with myself, but decided later the place was such a dive they just wanted the $2 I paid for the beer :) I'm having trouble figuring out why you're so wound up about it. Coming from a country with 30 Million people I was surprised at first at the lengths the US go to cover situations that could potentially result in legal liability. Waivers and disclaimers for everything. It has always amazed me that the US consumer is not expected to have any responsiblity. Spill a cup of coffee on yourself for example in Canada and you go to the bathroom and clean yourself up, and swear at yourself for being so careless. Do that in the US and you sue McDonalds for $1.8M and win. Ridiculous. I'm sure the over-the-top approach to the drinking age is a similar thing. I had a long talk with an officer in the US navy after I had to sign a waiver to walk through a WWII submarine in Hawaii. He said that he felt it was simply the result of having a capitalist population of 300 Million people. I don't believe in discriminating but having to modify your lingo so you won't culturally offend somebody is ridiculous.

Just want someone to explain to me why you must be 21 in the US to drink alcohol. At 18 you can vote, go to war, get married and have children. I remember reading somewhere that you can drive a car when you are 15. I just don't get waiting til your 21. I was in the US when I was 30. I had to show ID at an Ice Hockey game before I was served beer and before I was allowed to enter Cheers. Both times I was and looked older than the monkeys requesting the ID. Was pissed off severely at the time but laugh about it now. I thought it might be a topic that could run wild for a bit. All the good long threads always run while I'm asleep here in Australia or on the weekend when I'm out having a life. Sure - the chances that the replacement phrase would fit in context is slim, but that's not the point. To be honest, I've spent time in both the States and in Europe .. and from my experience it seems as though Europeans are more mature than most Americans. The drinking age is lower because they can handle themselves (in general). I live in Germany and there are more pubs downtown than anything else, everybodies getting drunk and there's barely any DUI's here .. in fact the only problems occur from the military people -- not the Germans.
