I quite like the idea of getting rid of all my scraps of paper that are currently stuffed into my (non-electronic) personal organizer (aka my Diary). If Santa was generous enough to get me a PDA for Christmas, then would I use any of the whiz-bang whistles and bells that you get on some of the more expensive versions? I like the look of the Tungsten T3, but the Tungsten E seems to do pretty much all I could (currently) expect to want for half the cost. Now would I use the features of the T3 if I had it though? I’ve no idea, not having used one of these gizmos myself, so where better to ask than the gathered wisdom of all you Cpians. Oh, and if anyone thinkks that (for example) iPaqs rock, and Palm Tungstens are the pits of the earth, then I would be interested to know before I tell santa which make and model to buy :) Debbie

Well, having owned a Palm OS device (the venerable Handspring Visor) and currently owning a Pocket PC (iPAQ 5450), I think I have a reasonable idea about both platforms: Palm OS devices traditionally have been great for general Contacts, Calendar, and general organising things. The more recent Pocket PCs have gotten pretty good too, but Palms usually have a slight edge on the user interface. OTOH, the Pocket PCs are usually much better at technology type things. They keep up with the state of the art, eg, Bluetooth, WiFi, etc. And as far as development goes, .NET CF and/or Embedded Visual Tools for Pocket PC is much nicer than Codewarrior or GCC for Palms. Pocket C is available for both, AFAIK, and there's a port of Python to the Pocket PCs. Both sync with Outlook really well. My own preference is for the Pocket PCs, but that's because I don't just do organising things, I also watch recorded video and stuff on it. And it comes with a version of Solitaire, which the Palms don't :-D The calculator on Palms is more advanced than the Pocket PCs, AFAIK. I would suggest that if all you want is an organiser for contacts and dates and memos, get a Palm. If you want a more flexible device, get a Pocket PC. -- Ian Darling "The moral of the story is that with a contrived example, you can prove anything." - Joel Spolsky

Although I have yet to join the ranks of the elite (PDA owners  ), I did spend some time looking at them. The Dell's seem very nice, and good value for money. Perhaps a Dell owning CPian will have further input... :)

I'm still using my Palm III, five years on... although it has been a bit cramped for space recently with all this bloatware getting into hundreds of KB in size ;) I have been considering a replacement, but can't decide between the current models - I want WiFi more than Bluetooth, but don't want the built-in keyboard that goes with it in Palm's range. I haven't really looked further afield. Your preferences may be different, but I would recommend looking for a machine which you can get a separate folding keyboard for (shouldn't be a problem with Palm, I don't know about Pocket PC). For most purposes, a stylus is good enough, but when you do want to do something a bit more text-intensive, you don't want to be messing about with a fiddly keypad crammed into the available space on the hardware. My Palm lives on my belt, the keyboard lives in my raincoat pocket - usually near enough to retrieve quickly if I need it. For Palm development, PocketC is probably the easiest and cheapest C-style development environment for a hobbyist but (last time I looked) it had its own API that you had to use. CodeWarrior is bigger, better, uses Palm's API and is correspondingly more expensive. It doesn't compare to Visual Studio in power and usability, though. I haven't done much with .NET or Pocket PCs (yet), but my impression is that they'll be easier to develop for. I'm likely to stick with Palm personally, but if I were making a corporate purchasing decision I'd probably go for pocket PC. Gavin Greig "Haw, you're no deid," girned Charon. The Dell are fine, i have one, works fine and does what it have to. Besides that I have 3 HP and an old Casio all of different models running different versions of Windows CE ;) The one I have enjoy'ed the most is my HP Jornada 548, but unfortunately it could not be upgraded from version Windows CE 3.0 (the first Pocket PC). And yes, I have so many because I have been developing for them since the CE "plugin" came out for VC6. - Anders Money talks, but all mine ever says is "Goodbye!"
