Installers

I know this has been asked before...but what do you guys think is the best installation software? We're looking at InstallShield, Wise, and InstallAnywhere.

Nullsoft's NSIS is pretty damn good for an open-sores project. http://nsis.sourceforge.net/site/index.php[^] In fact, considering the nightmares I hear about with InstallShield... All I've ever wanted was an honest week's pay for an honest day's work.

I will add my vote for NSIS too. I use it on my shareware and at times at work. Steve Maier, MCSD

I'll third the Inno tool. It's elegance is in it's simplicity. :) Chris Meech It's much easier to get rich telling people what they want to hear. Chistopher Duncan I can't help getting older, but I refuse to grow up. Roger Wright I've been meaning to change my sig. Thanks! I'm currently using Installshield Developer 8. (Hey, I need MSI support) It does the job okay. The UI still sucks, but at least it integrates into VS.NET which helps a little. For straight forward copy files and register COM objects installs then it does the job very well. It's when you come to want to do custom install dialogs, create database structures and stuff that is becomes a pain. Installscript is still a bitch to use but at least the debugger is better now. It's a lot of money, but non of the free-ones I've looked at seem to support MSI installers (which is very important to a lot of sys-admins). Ditto, InnoSetup is the way to go. My only complaint is trying to get it to *properly* register environment variables, but I think this is an issue with windows, not Inno. ¡El diablo está en mis pantalones! ¡Mire, mire! What is the advantage of using NSIS over InnoSetup? if you don't mind me asking, besides being open sores :) I never tried NSIS out:sigh: Later, JoeSox "That sounds exactly like the thinking of a machine to me." -- Morpheus, The Matrix Reloaded joeswammi.com ↔ humanaiproject.org ↔ joeswammi.com/sinfest

That's a good point. All the apps I write are XCOPY-able. So I wonder why the boss-man wants to buy an installer package... :~
