how do you do special effects on your name?

:-( I tried the font tag but kept getting this error Multiple-step OLE DB operation generated errors. Check each OLE DB status value, if available. No work was done.
first I thought the single quotes I used for setting the color was the problem as it prolly messed up the sql so I replaced with double quotes and got the same error then I removed both single and double quotes and yet it gave me that error waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah

Moral of the story? Don't try and make your display name look all cute :) We had this discussion awhile back and the bottom line was that people will put up with bold and italicised display names but not much more. Especially do not: - make your name bigger - make it smaller - make it flash - make it blink - make it scroll - give it a rollover - give it a javascript alert message - include a graphic (even an emoticon) - include sound - include Flash Same pretty much goes for your signature :) regards, Paul Watson Bluegrass Cape Town, South Africa "The greatest thing you will ever learn is to love, and be loved in return" - Moulin Rouge "In other words, the developer is dealing with an elephant, the accountant is dealing with a bunny rabbit." by Stan Shannon - 16/10/2001

Just curious but what does BusterBoy refer to in your display name? It is pretty cool though, not saying get rid of it :) regards, Paul Watson Bluegrass Cape Town, South Africa "The greatest thing you will ever learn is to love, and be loved in return" - Moulin Rouge "In other words, the developer is dealing with an elephant, the accountant is dealing with a bunny rabbit." by Stan Shannon - 16/10/2001

I disagree, making it flash (blink) will drive Netscrape users mad without effecting us superior Internet Explorer users!

- is that the string is too long. Limit it to 50 characters and it will work.

I think David is referring to the <blink> tag in Netscape which makes the text, well, blink. It is not supported in IE. However I can still make text blink in IE if I want to, bit of a mission and thankfully I don't want to. regards, Paul Watson Bluegrass Cape Town, South Africa "The greatest thing you will ever learn is to love, and be loved in return" - Moulin Rouge "In other words, the developer is dealing with an elephant, the accountant is dealing with a bunny rabbit." by Stan Shannon - 16/10/2001

You are asking how DAVID WULFF figured something out? The same man who has enough time to create a feature length BOB film and reply to every thread on the forum. Now repeat the question and think to yourself "Ahhh, of course. He sat there and for fifty attempts tried to figure out the max length of a display name." ;P regards, Paul Watson Bluegrass Cape Town, South Africa "The greatest thing you will ever learn is to love, and be loved in return" - Moulin Rouge "In other words, the developer is dealing with an elephant, the accountant is dealing with a bunny rabbit." by Stan Shannon - 16/10/2001

I'm afraid that Paul's assumption are correct - trial and error. I noticed that more than 50 characters in my name produced the error, and less than went frew okay.

The same man who has enough time to reply to every thread on the forum Hey, that's not true. I only reply to about 50% of the threads you know. The main reason is that I can't let anyone have the last word over me. I just have to word my comeback to everything. It's the others who are to blame - they're always brining up touchy subjects.

You are right, I was referring to the blink tag. I'm just curious, but was/is the blink tag part of any HTML standard, or was/is it a Netscape addition. I would love for it to be the later considering the amount of flak that's thrown at Microsoft for adding IE-specific tags.

I believe the blink tag is a Netscape specific addition, and probably one of the more annoying ones. "A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this all men will know that you are disciples, if you love one another -- JOhn 13:34-45"

My bad. For some stupid reason I wasn't checking the size of the input data before storing. This is fixed now. cheers, Chris Maunder (CodeProject)

50 chars max? What a coincidence... That's the default maximum size for text fields in MS Access ;P

Very good. A big elephant stamp for Pavlos! The forums were originally using the Jet engine, but with all the rewrites and upgrades that magic number has survived the test of time. Email addresses can be WAY longer than 50 chars, but for reasons of sanity and space saving I've kept to 50. A friend, who puts even David to shame for having way too much time, has the longest email address and the longest domain name I've come across. http://www.iwantedthelongestdomainnameintheworldandthisisaprettygoodone.com cheers, Chris Maunder (CodeProject)
