Black Belts come in different levels - called "Dans" so you can be 1st Dan, 2nd Dan and so on. Theoretically there is no limit to the dan number you can achieve but practically, the body starts to give out and very few ever get to 5th Dan or higher. Why do I know this? Because I also had a karate grading today. Must be the day for it. I passed but I collected a few bruises along the way. Good fun and I love the physicality of it - it is a great foil to a mentally intensive job. :jig: What's everyone else up to today? We are finally (ok, after 3 days... :-O ) going to see ROTK :-D. I also need to test two new lenses for my film camera (a 28mm and a x2 converter) and have the results developed to make sure they are accurate before going home in January. Should be a great day .

Black belt is really a starting point - it signifies that you have learned the basics (in my school, about 160 techniques). From then on the belt is designated by degrees, called dans. Between dans there are intermediate levels which indicate within the school where you are in your training. We use bits of colored tape on the tips of the belts to indicate to the teacher which step students are on to assist him in sorting out what to teach each of us in class. I'm testing for the second such step on the way to my 2nd dan belt, which will earn me a second gold bar embroidered on the end of the belt. My teacher has 6 of them.:) "Another day done - All targets met; all systems fully operational; all customers satisfied; all staff keen and well motivated; all pigs fed and ready to fly" - Jennie A.

Paul Hooper wrote: a great foil to a mentally intensive job. It certainly is! And what great fun it is. As a plus, it's also restored the stamina and flexibility I had 20 years ago; I should have started it then! I'm hoping to make it to 4th dan, but having started so late in life that's a really ambitious goal. Still, the benefits of trying far outweigh the consequences of being a couch potato - I intend to keep at it for as long as I can. It's so much more fun than lifting weights and jogging.:-D "Another day done - All targets met; all systems fully operational; all customers satisfied; all staff keen and well motivated; all pigs fed and ready to fly" - Jennie A.

Uhm.. is this some southern hemisphere thing? Botswana is north of South Africa (assuming your bio page is correct). You should be travelling up! ;) -- "We shall crush you down to the point, where there is no coming back, things will happen to you from which you could not recover if you lived a thousand years, a thousand years."

Well, in a sense you are going down. From your point of view, you are on top of the world, aren't you? It's not your fault all earth globes are upside-down? :-D -- "We shall crush you down to the point, where there is no coming back, things will happen to you from which you could not recover if you lived a thousand years, a thousand years."

Took a walk in the woods and beach, went to the hobby shop for some more train track for the train around the Christmas Tree, then got in a fender-bender leaving the parking lot. No one hurt, my car is fine, and the other car has really minor damage on the door and passenger side. I'm happy to finally put those tens of thousands of dollars in insurance payments I've made for the last 20 years to some use! Makes me want to go wreck some more cars!!! (just kidding!) :-D Stupid dent will probably be repairable within my $500 deductible, and my rates will go up anyways. OK, ok, I'll try real hard to shut up now. So, when we came home, we had a yummy dinner and added another loop on the tracks (these are Lionel O guage) that goes around the dining room table. Very cool. And yes, my girlfriend thinks it's great (and of course my son loves it). Marc Latest AAL Article My blog Join my forum!
