DVD Region Question
-
I wonder what the reason for having DVD regions other than to annoy the consumer. My first thought is to try to stop people in the usa from playing pirated movies from China and other countries that do not care about our copywrite laws but now that DVD players are cheap (some <$50) you could just buy a player for each region... Why anybody would buy a DVD player for every region, when you can buy a DVD player which has hacks from this site[^] My Panasonic DVD player plays and "Region 1" and "Region All" and all DVD's from India are in "Region All" format. So they work in any DVD player. But in India (most of Asia) people prefer VCD's/SVCD than DVD's.

Regions were a concession to the movie industry. Movies are usually released in stages, first US, then Europe, then Japan. It isn't unusual for a movie to be released in Europe or Japan just as the video version is coming out in the states. On top of that, smaller distributors want exclusive deals for their market. Japan was especially hyper about this, so it isn't just a US thing. I still find it very strange that Australia and New Zealand are lumped in with South America and the Carribean. It takes a bit of searching to find the right tools. And some may be worried that the police will come breaking down their door to send them to jail for 50 years.... John

No but you can buy a dvd player in the usa and program it to a region other than the usa. Currently you are limited to 5 changes. I think the whole concept is dumb... John

I think the main reason is so that they can maintain the usual time offset between releases in the different countries / continents. G. Raven
I guess this is a valid reason but since it is so easy to defeat who do they think they are stoping? John

Ahhh...an easy question to answer. It's purely marketing and nothing else. It means they can charge different prices in different regions and don't have to worry about people buying from out of their region to get better pricing. It's a sophisticated method of price fixing.

Well, it's a big thing in video games due to some licensing crap when it comes to certain companies in different countries. There was some kind of case about Pepsi being used in a Japanese but then it was Coke in the US version of the game. But it's also the same when it comes to time-based regional releases for video games. But of course, me and my friends had copies of JAP Tekken 4 and Soul Calibur before the US versions were released. We also had a JAP PS2 console, though.
