New computer

I just finished building my new computer. The first one I ever built. Certainly saved some money, but not sure I would want to do it again. I bought everything online, some of those places are not reliable.

I got most of the hardware from newegg.com, they seem to have the lowest prices (for the things I wanted). And have good service. compuplus.com sent me the wrong case twice. They refunded my purchase price, but I still ended up paying shipping both ways for both cases. provantage.com shipped the wrong case, they refunded my money including shippping. From now on newegg.com is the only place I will deal with.

CooL :) I don't know how you do it but both computer that i build were way over budget. :-O It is hard follow your plan when each part on your list seems to have something much better but only slightly cheaper. :laugh:

It was hard. There was always something I wanted that was just a little bit more money. I did not buy the biggest or best of anything. I tried to find the sweet spot and stay in it. Also good to catch stuff on sale.
I didnt buy anything online, just went to the shop where they sold computer parts, bought all that i needed and assembled them home and woala a new computer. ;) I Touched Osama Bin Ladens Bushy Beard

I can tell you from my experience, essencompu.com is a very good PC parts dealer. They're quick with shipping and have decent all-around prices for their parts. The system I am running right now has pretty much everything bought from them (the case, motherboard, cpu/fan and the memory all bought from them). I would suggest them, they often end up being one of the cheapest dealers on pricewatch, also. I got evrything I ordered and all within a week's time.

In the UK there is the "distance selling regulation" anything you buy on line, on the phone etc. can be returned within 7 days or receipt without having to give any reason, so those offers on amazon.co.uk offering free returns are required by law. I would say building you own PC, from my experiece, does not save you any money, but you can build it exactly to your own spec. Plus you get to install the OS and you will have bought the genuine XP etc disc, rather that what PC World, Evesham, Tiny (yech) etc. give you.

Like, why buy a new floppy drive, when you have one sitting around that has never been spun much. Or you might have some cards that can be just added. Regardz Colin J Davies

I build my own in order to get the configuration that suits me, even though I don't really save much on price. Since I'm not far from Manchester, a trip to Micro Direct[^] usually gets me everything I need in one trip plus I can pick out the case from the shop. Elaine :rose: The tigress is here :-D

The chain "computer stores" (CompUSA, Best Buy etc) have driven the parts sellers out :(( around me. It IS surprising how much the office supply stores carry now. :omg: for cables and consumables (Blank CDs, DVDs, Ink Cartridges etc) they are the first place I look for sales.

i built my first (own) computer when i was 14... alone, in about half an hour... and everything has been working fine! Don't try it, just do it! ;-)
