Nasa's Mars rover Spirit has stopped sending useful data to Earth from the Red Planet and mission scientists are unable to send it commands. Story[^] Kind of coincidental after Marc Clifton's thread earlier today, critical of the engineering quality/practices at NASA. :|

Well, down under we heard that it had sent a few more pictures - I wonder if it was before or after your post.. There have been severe electrical storms 'down-under', in the specific region where the Tidbinbilla deep space tracking station is (DSS-34, DSS-43, DSS45, DSS-46) which relays the commands from NASA to the beastie) ... (I dont know about DSS-49 out at Parkes, quite a bit west of here ...) If you follow http://www.cdscc.nasa.gov/Pages/pg02_antennas.html[^] you'll see a lot of your tracking is being provided by us humble Aussies ;-) 'G'

Chuckle .. its not unknown even here in suburban Sydney for tv antennae to be dislodged by marauding opossums (like the f**king family of em that play football on my roof everynight) Some of our native birds, like Galah's & Cockatoo's may roost on the dishes at night, although its been years since I've been there, I would have thought they had anti fouling (pun intented) devices ... - Cockatoos's are especially destructive, they like seeing what they can eat and pick things apart ... I often see them here in town on the blank wall opposite my building picking concrete our of cracks in the bricks - I think they do it for salts/minerals ... 'G'

The mars rovers use VxWorks. Pathfinder had a similar problem due to a priority inversion bug. They were able to fix it remotely. A good article describing the problem and fix: http://research.microsoft.com/~mbj/Mars_Pathfinder/Mars_Pathfinder.html[^] Anyone who thinks he has a better idea of what's good for people than people do is a swine. - P.J. I guess, that's possible. But if true, the ability to cover up this kind of info can't happen forever. BTW: How do we know that Martians are Green ? Regardz Colin J Davies

The defense department has been supressing video footage of ufo's taken from the space shuttle for years. I bet astronaughts are made to swear not to tell or they have their memories erased. That's exactly why Bush came out for a huge increase for the space program, to not look anti scientific when really he's just keeping his bible thumping cronies happy. Proof of life on Mars would cause quite a stir. Better left to the loonies who watch the sci fi channel. :(

I may be wrong but it was a UK telescope which detected the first transmissions from this latest mission. I doubt they could decode them but the point is that they could detect them and probably with a bit of thinking deduce from which satelite relay it came from. So NASA can't hide that the mission is still transmitting (though of course they can say that the data being sent back is garbage or some other story). regards, Paul Watson Bluegrass South Africa Christopher Duncan quoted: "All Corvettes are red. Everything else is just a mistake." Crikey! ain't life grand? Einstein says...
