Just wondered what people's oppinion was on Bill Gates getting knighted
Billy boy has enjoyed a very cosy relationship with the New Labour government and this is just another example of the establishment looking after its own. Personally, being as republican, I think the whole concept of knighthoods is irrelevant in the 21st century.

Well, he's put a sizable portion of his wealth into the Gates Foundation: "...the Seattle-based foundation has an endowment of approximately $26 billion through the personal generosity of Bill and Melinda Gates." (http://www.gatesfoundation.org/AboutUs/[^]) I think the Gates Foundation is also keen on making sure that the money given to it is being used efficiently and gets to the people who need it - something suprisingly few charities actually do. It wouldn't be wrong to describe the Gates' as the most generous philanthropists in the world. -- Ian Darling "The different versions of the UN*X brand operating system are numbered in a logical sequence: 5, 6, 7, 2, 2.9, 3, 4.0, III, 4.1, V, 4.2, V.2, and 4.3" - Alan Filipski

Last year the Gates foundation gave more money to the fight against Malaria than any nation - let alone individual. '--8<------------------------ Ex Datis: Duncan Jones Merrion Computing Ltd

I read somewhere once that he gave away half of all he earns, and considering he is worth 22 billion pounds, that must be 22 billion pounds

There won't actually be a sword involved as this is an "honorary" knighthood and not a "substantive" knighthood. See this article[^] by the BBC to see what will actually be involved and find out a bit more about what Bill Gates can actually "do" with his knighthood. --Colin Mackay--

There are plenty of other deserving cases too - the world is full of people who either give large amounts or work for charity. Bill got his for politcial reasons not because he is a great humanitarian. He was probably promised one when he offered to pour money into Cambridge University.

What exactly is a "substantive" knighthood, other than a cool title and a foolproof way of meeting women? Do you get any extra rights or privileges?

Since I think the whole Knighthood thing is lame, I really don't care. Anyone who thinks he has a better idea of what's good for people than people do is a swine. - P.J. O'Rourke

With a substantive knighthood IIRC you go down on one knee and get "dobbed"(sp?) (Where she takes a sword and touches you on the sholder with it) and then the Queen says "Arise, Sir...". The use of the "Sir" title is also permitted with a substantive knighthood. Bill Gates won't get any of that because he's getting an "Honorary" knighthood. He can upgrade to "substantive" at anytime if he becomes a British Citizen. --Colin Mackay--
