Nikon D70
-
As if the choice was not hard as it is, Nikon just released their D70 at $999. A direct competitor with the Canon EOS 300D. They are pretty similar though the D70 does seem to be marginally better from the specs (based on their marketing you would think there is no contest, go marketing!) I imagine it is also better made than the 300D. One nice thing for some people is the instant-on feature. A 300D or 10D takes about 3 seconds to power up, the D70 can shoot from the moment you turn the switch. About the same weight as the 300D (650g) with a battery. So, Chris, ever thought of going Nikon? ;) regards, Paul Watson Bluegrass South Africa Christopher Duncan quoted: "All Corvettes are red. Everything else is just a mistake." Crikey! ain't life grand? :omg: Paul, you don't know what you're doing. My wife could read this and I would have to find a new contract for buying her new camera ... ;) That's what we've been waiting for. We ha dplans to buy the 300D and heard about the D70. So we waited and have to decide which one to buy. Greetings,

[email] [web] What is her email? I will encourage her and then she can tell me what it is like. ;) Still, the 300D is already on the market and you can get one within days. The D70 is not yet available and will take a month or two to ship. If she already has Nikkor lenses then I think the choice is clear, wait a bit. If she has Canon lenses, then get the 300D now. If no lenses then choose the brand you prefer, I really think it is a matter of personal preference in this case. There is nothing in the D70 that will make or break a decision in favour of it over a 300D. My 10D should be arriving friday, having trouble sleeping I am so excited :-D regards, Paul Watson Bluegrass South Africa Christopher Duncan quoted: "All Corvettes are red. Paul Watson wrote: I will encourage her and then she can tell me what it is like Nice idea, Paul. Go get your own D70! ;) Paul Watson wrote: Still, the 300D is already on the market and you can get one within days. Yes, we took a close look on it and we already had decided to buy it. But Nikon is always worth to wait for :) And, we don't need to get it now, the longer you wait, the lower the price. As for the lenses, we have the choice. We're now using our Canon A1's and we don't have took part on that autofocus-thingies so far. But we decided to go digital and our odl lenses don't work with the 300D so it would be no problem to switch to a new brand. That's the advantage of Nikon, you can always use all your lenses ... So I think, we'll buy the D70 after having a closer look at it. I will let you now, Paul. Paul Watson wrote: If she already has Nikkor lenses then I think the choice is clear You mean the camera ships without lenses (okay, feels strange, might not be the case) or is it the extra filters/zooms etc, Can a separate pack of these lenses fit future version of cameras ? Regards, Kannan

Correct, $999 will get you just the body for the D70 and the 300D. If you want a lens to come with it, you pay about an extra $200. Inter changeable lens cameras are better than their fix-lens brethern in most respects, but are naturally priced higher. If all you want is to point & shoot then a fixed lens system is better for you. If you ever want to get serious about photography then a fixed lens system will quickly become frustrating. The thing is that to a large degree the quality of your photos is dependant on the lens glass you use. The body, especially in film photography, is just a body to house the film and line up the lens. In digital the body does make a bigger impact but you still want to use good glass. The lens I am getting with my new 10D actually costs more than the body. Over the years I want to grow a good collection of lenses, so allowing you to choose the right lens for the scene. Saying all of that there are cross-over digital fixed lens cameras that are really good. The Sony F828 is a great example of this. 28mm to 200mm Carl Zeis zoom lens and a very good digital sensor at a good price of about $900. regards, Paul Watson Bluegrass South Africa Christopher Duncan quoted: "All Corvettes are red. I bought a 300D on Monday :D I was *that* close to getting the 10D but my bank balance forbade it and after spending a month umm-ing and ah-ing over the two I realised that in the end a 300D was far better than my old Olympus OM-2 I used to have, had pretty much every feature I could want or use, was light enough to make travelling comfortable, and with the extra $1000 I'd saved I could stock up on extra lenses. This is my first serious digital SLR so I figured I'd get the cheaper one, get used to it, and then if I got 2 good years out of it then that would allow me to save up for whatever $2000, 50 megapixel beast will be available by then. I was a little worried about the build/weather seal quality while outside yesterday in the blizzards but it's been treating me well so far. cheers, Chris Maunder

Now that looks very interesting. I particularly noted that '2000 shots per charge' information. Is this average for a digital SLR? My little Olympus is lucky to get 50 before the batteries give up. One of the things that has so far put me off converting to a digital SLR is the extra baggage for chargers and suchlike... maybe its time to rethink this.

I was also surprised at that, even if you chop a third off as you normaly should for the manufacturers battery estimate that is still 1340. The 300D is rated at 600 but normally hits 500 a charge, 400 with flash. I am going to remain skeptical until someone can do some hands on, third party verifying. We have all seen laptops rated at 8 hours battery life and then only coming in at 4 or 5 in the real world. One nice aspect though is that the D70 accepts disposable batteries too, in a special case of course but still, very handy that for emergencies. >has so far put me off converting to a digital SLR is the extra baggage for chargers and suchlike... maybe its time to rethink this. Hmmm, well the 10D uses the BP-511 battery which is really quite small. It can easily be carried in a top pocket or bag side-pocket or you get a battery grip and leave them in there (plus the grip accepts disposables too). Buy a few and carry them around. Even the charger is a travellers size. But yes, lots more power bits than film. regards, Paul Watson Bluegrass South Africa Christopher Duncan quoted: "All Corvettes are red. Wooooooohooooooooo! Fantastic, Chris. Look forward to some lightning shots sharpish. Did you get the EFS lens with it? >and with the extra $1000 I'd saved Is that Canadian or US? If the latter then damn but that is a horrible price difference, no wonder you went with the 300D. With import duties and all the other bits a 10D is "only" $550 more expensive than the 300D for me. >to save up for whatever $2000, 50 megapixel beast will be available by then. Indeed. Digital is turning photographic equipment into a Intel vs. AMD battle. You buy a body and shortly afterwards something better pops out and people scramble in selling what they have and upgrading etc. etc. It is crazy. I am getting emails telling me I am crazy, that I should wait for the PMA show in a months time to see if they upgrade the 10D. But bugger it. That will come out and you will only be able to get hold of it in 3 months time, the 10D won't drop that much in price and by then something else will be on the horizon. Anyway, I am just excited for Friday. Enjoy your baby :) regards, Paul Watson Bluegrass South Africa Christopher Duncan quoted: "All Corvettes are red. Everything else is just a mistake." Ah, thanks for the correction, Glenn. "The D70 will cost $999 as body only and $1299 with the new 18 - 70 mm DX lens". Makes it a bit less attractive compared to the 300D. Of course this is all scuttlebut talk until some reviewers get the D70 in their hands to actually test. It (plus the lens) may be so brilliant that it is worth the extra cash, though the same is not true between the Canon 10D and the Nikon D100. regards, Paul Watson Bluegrass South Africa Christopher Duncan quoted: "All Corvettes are red.
