You're paying far too little; send some more. I made about $16,000, counting about $12,000 that was my retirement fund in an IRA. But half that was actually a loan against the fund that I couldn't repay for lack of income, but it's counted as income even though i didn't receive it. And I have to pay 10% of the total on top of the tax as a penalty for having to remove it from the account to live. Of course, $3300 was withheld for taxes, so I'll only owe another $3,000 or so come April 15th. Heard in Bullhead City - "You haven't lost your girl -
you've just lost your turn..." [sigh] So true...

I wish I only had to pay 11% of my earnings - California has one of the highest (if not the highest) tax rates in the USA - all taxes together was 37% of my income for 2003 (Federal, State, Social Security, Medicare and State Disability Insurance). I put 0 dependents for the witholding so I will get a little back...:sigh: Steve

Pfft!, for every DKK I earn up to 295.300 DKK, I pay 53% to the taxman. For amounts above that, I pay about 60%. Lucky me, with my salary I don't have to pay the high tax for more than about 50.000 DKK  "After all it's just text at the end of the day. - Colin Davies "For example, when a VB programmer comes to my house, they may say 'does your pool need cleaning, sir ?' Thank you ... I feel much better now. :-) Normally I dont complain about my income tax, but recently I inherited some money and the tax on that really surprised me. The federal goverment got 48% via inheritance tax, the state got 13% via it's inheritance tax, and since the money was from a pre-tax profit sharing account I still have to pay about 30% income tax .. which is a total of 91% .. leaving me with 9% of what I thought I inherited ... gee, I wish my parents had just spent it while they were alive that way at least they could have gotten some enjoyment out of it.

How does it break down? It depends on your number of dependants etc. Also you have to look at where it is all going, Social Security, Federal income, state income etc etc. I guess I'm "fortunate" enough to have more tax deductible spending than I make in a year (college) so i always get everything back. Arbetsgivaravgift is a company tax, not an employee tax. :) So, you don't live in a cardboard box in the middle of the road, eating nothing but dirt for breakfast, lunch and dinner ;) FYI: my effective tax for 320+k was 37.5% in taxes. But I have a home-pc deal on it, so I got tax deductions because of it. I figure I had paid perhaps 40% without it. -- Gott weiß ich will kein Engel sein.

There is no single tax in Europe. There are as many tax systems in Europe as there are countries. Some systems are simpler than others. Also, I think it's more interesting to compare living expenses rather than taxes. I.e., how much money do you still have in your wallet/on your account when everything has been paid for. -- Gott weiß ich will kein Engel sein.

:-D I know what you mean. I just calculated my taxes for this year and it looks like I'll get a $1600 refund. Which means the IRS will keep the $1200 I owe them from last year, and probably tack on some penalties and figure out a way so that I get $0.50 back.

If I were to guess by looking at your numbers, I would say that you only worked part of the year. Is that true? ------------------------------------------ Law of Nazi Analogies: As an online discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Nazis or Hitler approaches one. In any debate, Hitler's opinion on the subject is automatically the evil one, so it had better be contrary to the side you're arguing.
