It's amazing the things one finds

in the local public library. The library in this case is the Mesquite branch of the Phoenix Public Library. Just about the last thing I'd have expected to find was the 5 DVD collection of the BBC series I Claudius[^]. But there it was :) I'm just finished episode 8 - we've seen the downfall of Sejanus and the next episode covers (I'm sure) the transition of power from Tiberius to Caligula. John Hurt is magical as Caligula. This is the second time I've seen this series. The first was when it was shown on Australian TV in 1978. It lives up to my memory of how good it was :) But I do have one quibble. I don't remember noticing this the first time I saw it, but it sticks out like a sore thumb today. All the child actors sound exactly like British public school boys. It has been rumoured that Tony Blair, with his new self confidence, will sue the BBC for "I Claudius" and requiere them to change the story so that ALL emperors are good-hearted and intelligent!!! Seriously, it is a great series. I saw it back in the late 70's as well. And seeing it in the 90's, it first surprised me that the the scenography was sparse, bordering on the primitive. But After 20 minutes I was completely drawn into the the drama of the story again.
