Well, I am wait-listed for an upcoming week-long class my company is offering (in May) about web services. It is a class on how to implement web services using Java. At issue though, is that I don't know Java. :-O I do have a strong C++ background. So... shall I: :bob: Spend some time on my own (e.g., at home) learning Java? :bob: Find a way to learn Java on company time? :bob: Don't worry about it, and just go to the class to learn general web-service concepts? As, I'm sure, there are a billion other ways of implementing Web services. Remember, even if you win the rat race, you're still a rat.

I would definately go with option #3 if your job description right does not require you to be developing web services in the near future. Furthermore, since you have strong C++ background, I do not think you will have many problems adapting to Java if you do whish to learn that programming language. And yes, Java isn't the only way to implement web services.

As a C++ programmer, I strongly advise against attempting to learn Java. C++ has been shown by AMA experimental results to cause insanity after a more than five years of continuous use. Tackling Java could easily push you over the edge. :-O Seriously though, Web Services aren't about C++ or Java. They are about SOAP and XML. This is what you must understand and learn. dare to think the impossible

Yeah, that's the impressoin I get, too. Although it might make my life easier if I know at least enough about Java to follow the examples and stuff. Yeah, that's the thing- there likely will be web services in my future, whether Java is the right way to go in implementing them, though, is another issue. Ah well, guess I should learn at least enough to follow along any of the examples... Remember, even if you win the rat race, you're still a rat.
