Travelling by train in the UK
-
Aren't there a lot of people here from the UK that travel by train (or know how to)? I live in Iceland and I'm going to a concert in Glasgow in April. I could fly directly to Glasgow, only problem is that it would cost me an arm and a leg. Then I could fly to Stanstead (which is a lot cheaper), and maybe take a train to Glasgow. Only problem is that there are several things I know nothing about:
- if there are any trains going from Stanstead to Glasgow (directly or indirectly)
- when they go, so I can figure out when I need to book my flight
- how much it would cost (would the cost of the trains perhaps eat up the advantage of flying to Stanstead?)
Any help would be greatly appreciated, links to websites providing info etc. :-)

Try http://www.virgintrains.co.uk/[^] You can find timetables and buy tickets for trains run by everyone, not just Virgin. Also, provided you don't lose the identifier number on the day you can go to the station and collect your ticket from a mmachine. No need for it to get lost in the post ! Stanstead to Galsgow is the entire length of the UK (pretty much) and will cost at least £60 return. There are probably flights cheaper and quicker. '--8<------------------------ Ex Datis: Duncan Jones Merrion Computing Ltd

I would suspect it would be more than that, Doncaster to Chelmsford one way cost £60 odd. David Parrott

You can catch a train from Stanstead to Liverpool Street station in central London. From there you would have to catch an underground train (tube) to Kings Cross (for GNER trains) or Euston (for Virgin trains) to Glasgow. If you go to the Virgin Trains website (www.virgintrains.co.uk[^]) and book tickets more than 3 weeks in advance of your trip you should be able to get very good deals - from as little as £15 each way. Alternatively as has been mentioned have a search around for cheap flights - could be cheaper, and will certainly be faster. HTH :)

How far in advance is this? You could fly to Stansted then book on a low fares airline to Glasgow - There are tons of flights between Glasgow and London (even more to Edinburgh [a couple of years ago I counted something like 90~odd flights between London and Edinburgh per day] - If you don't mind an additional one hour bus ride to get to Glasgow from Edinburgh)

Sorry if you've already been told this, the replies to this message have scrolled off my screen, however, a very good website for train info and even purchasing tickets is www.thetrainline.com[^]. -- Andrew.
