What we geeks find interesting and desirable is likely to confuse and frustrate mere mortals. I was referring to the quality of answers likely to result from a site filled with geeks. The toys we like are mysterious and frightening to the masses.:) Will Build Nuclear Missile For Food - No Target Too Small

I have a web site that I will be holding a contest every two months for a grand prize. The prize will usually be somewhere in the ball park of $300. What I am wondering is for the general public, what would be good grand prizes. The first prize that will be given away on June 1st will probably be a DVD recorder for your home entertainment system. These seem to be popular but few people actually have then yet. BTW, if you have any suggestions on a good model, I would love to hear from you. I need to pick a list of prizes for this year to plan ahead. What do you think would make a good prize for the general public other than just boring cash? Remember the target price would be somewhere around $300. The August 1st giveaway, I plan to offer five runner up prizes around $50 each and may be moving the grand prize to $500 value. Any ideas of what people would really like to have that most people would not already have? I think products are usually better than vacation trips, what do you think? Actually, it does not have to be anything related to computers. Just trying to figure out some things that people would really love to have that most do not already have. As an example, the idea of DVD recorder came from the fact I do not have one, and doubt I would allocate the money to buy one any time soon, BUT, if it was a prize, I could get excited by that. I figure that most people do not have one yet and may be in the same boat. There has to be other things out there that people would like to have but never seem to find a way to justify buying it. Well... Spam huh.... Well, I have never considered asking for help on CP as being spam... I live in a very small city in Oregon, and CP is about my only geek outlet. Here it is like Tech what? Products are definitely better than vacation trips! While I doubt that the things this crowd will recommend would be attractive to the average Joe, all is not lost. Get a copy of catalogs from Brookstone, for instance, and other one-of-a-kind dealers - the magazines in the backs of airline seats contain good items, too. I don't suggest actually buying from those sources, as their prices are far above retail. Identify the merchandise and locate the manufacturers, then amke your own deal. The DVD recorder is an excellent idea, and something most people would like to have but probably would not buy for themselves - the ideal attractant. Tivo-type TV recorders would be good, as would video games. High quality air cleaners in unique configurations are also popular, but rarely purchased. Yeah, I was thinking about that, but figure with the satellite companies providing them and a lot of people already have them, it would not be as big of attraction. Video game consoles fell into about the same boat, since many people already have them and are waiting for new versions to come out. But, when new versions do arrive, I think they will make a great gift. Like the new system I heard of that Microsoft is planning to put out that combines Tivo and Xbox features together. Guess I should watch out for for new hot products that are coming out. That way most people do not already have them. Of course I will avoid the Roomba Vaccum ;) Thanks for the input! If you get a product that you would not normally justify purchasing, you actually gain something. Personally, if I saw a cash prize for $300 or a DVD Recorder, I would go for the recorder.
