Hey guys, I have a question. Is there some kind of glasses that help relieve eye stress when you look at the monitor. My eyes get so red when I'm more than hour staring at the monitor. I have to wait until the next morning for them to be ok. Perhaps there is some special glasses, high res monitor, or some other gadget? Thanks

Eric, go to an eye doctor. It might be something as simple as minor strabismis (misaligned eyes). I think on average 1 in 10 have some form of it. Strabismis runs rampant through my family with 3 of us having very minor misaligned eyes. Just because you can't see misaligned eyes doesn't mean they aren't. My brother wasn't diagnosed until he was 35ish. My father in his 40s. Tim Smith Descartes Systems Sciences, Inc.

Hi Eric I had an eye problem some time ago. The problem was that I used to sit late at night with my machine connected to the net. To avoid being scolded [by my mother who didnt approve of it much] I used to turn the lights off and dim my monitor's brightness. I had a small lamp nearby so I could type. Well it turned out that, what I did wasnt too smart. I had severe eye-pain and I ahd to visit an eye-clinic. The doc said I had what is called CVS [computer vision syndrome]. She said my eye muscles were over-strained. I had to take eye-drops for two months. She gave me some tips. Avoid turning the brightness too much. At the same time, dont make it too dim. Take a 3 minute break after every 1 hour. Every now and then look at a point some 20 feet away and try and get your eyes out-of-focus. Just get it all blurry. Wash your face once or twice a day. and she specially said, DONT sit in front of your computer without proper room lighting Regards Nish

This might sound funny, but when looking at the screen, do you blink? I have a colleague that would (when we needed to work late, deadlines) get major head-aches and eye-strain. We banded about some theories (he'd just had a prescription renewed for his glasses, so that was fine) because it was only after a long time of very hectic coding that he suffered. We eventually noticed/worked out that he didn't blink and his eyes were literally drying out! After a few weeks of shouting "Blink" we wrote a small program that played a "Blink" sound through his headphones (we all listen to our own music through them here). Problem solved, except for his inadvertent jumping to his feet every half-hour in shock! :) Regards, Ray

            1. Make sure you're monitor is running at 75Hz or above. I find 85Hz to be best for me. 2. Don't use a low contract color scheme in windows. I see people running grey text on a black backround. Ack. 3. If you run a large monitor or high res (1280 or above) you can change the system font to large (Display Properties). 4. You can also set a custom font in IE so text is larger than normal. The text on my 21" is HUGE but I don't get any eye strain either (and people don't have to stick their face in my monitor to see something :) 5. See an eye doctor just to make sure it's not something else. 6. If possible get a bigger montior. For programming I wouldn't work on anything less than a 17".

When I had eye strain, I just needed some glasses. Hmm, 29 before I needed glasses is not bad I suppose. I also had then coated with some very light green film stuff, that cuts down on the glare and reflections from the monitor. Jeremy Davis http://www.astad.org

Thanks to everyone that answered. I changed the refresh rate of my monitor to optimal and that may it a bit better. I think the best way would be to go to the eye specialist and get them checked out. Probably need some drops or something. Thanks again.

I have always assumed that the eye strain would be worse on a bigger monitor. I have used a 15 inch monitor for ages now and only ever get blurred vision and strain when i'm very tired. I have considered getting a flat-screen for a while now, but the constant dead pixels really put me off. Simon Hey, it looks like you're writing a letter!

Better make it digital becaue the analog ones usually run at 60Hz. Mine claims to support 75Hz, which is why I got it, but it doesn't really. It looks awefull running at 75Hz. I'm typing this on a flat-screen and it sucks compared to my 19" tube sitting next to it. I think dead pixels mostly a thing of the past. I can't see any on this low-to-midrange flat-screen.

Works really great, no difference in percieved color, and I can actually stare at a vehicle's headlights straight-on :omg: , with no discomfort whatsoever. In my experience, the biggest thing that helps is having proper lighting. The monitor must be significantly brighter than the ambient lighting in the room. If the monitor is darker, your eyes will get strained. It's similar to when you're outside in the daylight and trying to look into a building thru the doorway - you have to squint to see inside the building. I'd suggest paying attention to the lights in your office/room and turning off some lights if it's too bright. --Mike-- http://home.inreach.com/mdunn/ If there's something strange / in your VC code / Who you gonna call? / Ghostbusters! your :bob: with :vegemite: and
