As always, they forgot the golden rules for software migration: 1. Plan ahead 2. Test ahead 3. Have a backup route 4. Migrate piece by piece, slowly, retesting as each piece is replaced. I was talking today about a company I know that was migrating a 25 years old complex set of mainframe software to Unix. The timeframe was 6 months, and after this, they became surprised that almost nothing is complete at all. Now they're projecting a new timeframe of around 2 years (which I bet won’t be met again). What did they expect? The software took 25 years to build! It was a complete absence of humbleness expecting it to be complete in 6 months! Ok, today you clearly know what needs to be built and have better tools, but only a fool would believe things would be made 50x faster! The same applied to Munich: why didn’t they replace things piece by piece? It would take a few years, but it would be safe and the progress would be easy to measure. Really, did someone expect that they would some day wake up and things would be running on Linux? I see dumb people

I really find it interesting that people wote that post down. I'm starting to think that there are more Linux zealots that Windows devs here on CP. Well, maybe not more, but IMHO too many. It bugs me big time when people keeps bashing MS and praising Linux on a Windows Developer site. Go to ./ or get a life guys. Now I'll lean back, in my flame proof suit, and watch people wote this one down. X| - Anders Money talks, but all mine ever says is "Goodbye!" ShotKeeper, my Photo Album / Organizer Application[^]

I absolutely can't stand using anything from Microsoft, but I'd buy a Mac before I tried Linux again. The plain truth is that if you want to get work done, you simply can't use Linux. And as long as the Linux zealots are doing using shit like porting Linux to the XBox, or to the iPod, or to your average every-day 4-slice toaster, instead of improving the hardware support, advocating commercial apps, and improving the installation of applications, Linux ain't goin' nowhere (and that pisses me off). Period.
