I am looking for an audio player to replace windows media player. I am just not a big fan. Can anyone give me a recommendation?? I hear Winamp, iTunes. I hear good and bad things about both of them. I've tried quite a few audio players recently, and, in my opinion, foobar2000[^] is by far the best. It's small, fast, highly customizable, has a good plugin architecture, it's fast, plays nearly every file format mankind came up with, and did I mention it's fast? Hail Eris! All Hail Discordia!

I use iTune as my main player , and foobar2000 for the occasional ogg file I get; never liked winamp. iTune is simple, do it's thing well, and manage mp3 and aac files well; once you get over the file organisation issue, iTune takes control of your files, will re-organise them in artists/albums/ folders, and compilations/albums folders; meaning that if you were used to pick files and/or manually organise your files directly from explorer , this mean you will be disapointed.

Like so many times I have said before , I belive WMP9 is best media player. Whenever I tried to use another ones like winamp or real player , I switch back to it. no point installing many music players when you hear the same music from all of them... I just stick to winamp, media player never liked it.

I use MusicMatch Jukebox. It can play audio files, video files, audio CDs, grab mp3s from audio CDs, and convert audio files to other formats (e.g. wav to mp3, wma to mpa, and vice versa). Looking only at the features, WinAmp is better - but the WinAmps default skin has too small text. The default skin of Jukebox has bigger letters ;)

If all you have is MP3s, get whatever the last 2.x version of WinAmp was. Winamp 2 was lovely but then Windows Media Player 9 came along and I started using that. Then Winamp 3 came out and to my mind it was Real Player with a Winamp skin, i.e. crap. So I stuck with WMP9. Then Winamp 5 came out (Winamp skipped a version number, poor 4) and it is actually really good. After using WMP I could not go back to Winamp 2 as it's playlist features were poor. Winamp 5 fixed that and the player itself was very good. Unfortuanatley I found Winamp 5 unusable on Windows 2000, kept crashing and skipping. used to have a player called sonique loved it then switched to winamp, WMP9 is nice too but somehow i prefer winamp 5 i can't even remember what my point is now, but anyway, i'm correct Barring unforeseen acts of God and Adminstrators, my server will be up tomorrow. I'm more worried about the Adminstrators.

I don't know about iTunes but recently I did a quick listen test and WMP9 definitely has a better decoder than Winamp 5, less muddy at the bottom. Elaine :rose: The tigress is here :-D

I like its keyboard functions better and the global keyboard functions are nice. and nice easy little key function for searching for MP3s on play list. And its nice compatibility with XMMS for Linux. It was really nice to be able to just load the playlist in XMMS full and complete, no changes or problems. Also, a lot its plugins are real nice. But I run Win2k with wiamp 5.02 and it runs just fine, no skips, no crashes. Don't know what's up with your Winamp, must be system specific.

I second Winamp. I guess becuase I'm so comfortable with Winamp. I don't see the point to using wmp9 whatsoever except for video files. I like its keyboard functions better and the global keyboard functions are nice. and nice easy little key function for searching for MP3s on play list. And its nice compatibility with XMMS for Linux. Something that's bugged me for ages about the WMP9 interface is that the drop-down at the top right corner of the window, next to the minimize, maximize and close buttons, doesn't show albums. I accidentally discovered this feature over the weekend: right-click the box. You get a menu with checkmarks indicating what gets shown in this list: CD Drives, My Playlists, All Music, Genres, All Videos, Radio Stations, Albums and Artists. By default, CD Drives, My Playlists, All Music and All Videos are checked. Annoyingly, you can't seem to get rid of the automatic playlists. Stability. What an interesting concept. -- Chris Maunder
